Org. Setting and Reporting

The internship in the United Nations Office for Partnerships, UNHQ, New York, is for six months with a desired starting date of 10 March 2020. The internship is unpaid and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

The Intern supports the UNOP team, including the Executive Director, Senior Sustainable Development Officer, Chief of Office, Coordinator of the SDG Advocates Programme and others, in several activities of the programmatic work of UNOP, and specifically the SDG Strategy Hub and the SDG Advocates.

The United Nations Office for Partnerships (UNOP) serves as a global gateway for public-private partnerships to advance the implementation of the 2030 Agenda. The Office oversees the following areas:

-The United Nations Fund for International Partnerships established in 1998 as the interface between the United Nations Foundation and the United Nations system.
-The United Nations Democracy Fund established 2005 to support democratization around the world.
-UNOP also provides Partnership Advisory and Outreach Services in response to demand from the UN system, Governments and non-State actors to catalyse public-private partnerships, through high-impact events and advice to potential partners regarding opportunities and good practices to promote the SDGs as a framework for action. In this capacity, UNOP also serves as the Secretariat for the Secretary-General's SDG Advocates and the SDG Strategy Hub.
-The SDG Strategy Hub (Hub) serves as a one-stop shop to proactively engage, connect, convene and leverage critical actors and existing platforms seeking to educate, empower and mobilize citizens, influencers and other stakeholders to act in support of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Responsibilities

Responsibilities of the internship position range widely. They may include but are not limited to:

-Conduct research on issues related to partnerships, policy, advocacy, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) agenda;
-Support the operations of the SDG Strategy Hub;
-Support the operations of the Secretary-General's SDG Advocates group;
-Draft various written materials related to the Decade of Action and the SDGs;
-Contribute to various reports and documents prepared by the Office;
-Prepare research on advocacy and communications efforts. Assisting in communicating with existing and potential partner organizations;
-Assist with the social media efforts of the SDG Advocates;
-Assist and contributing to preparation and production of high-level partnership events and Strategy Hub meetings;
-Update the SDG Advocates website and other outreach materials;
-Attend and taking notes at various UN conferences and meetings;
-Assist UNOP staff as requested.

Education

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:

-Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

(a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
(b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); or
(c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above).

- Be computer literate in standard software applications
- Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter
-Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience

Applicants to the United Nations Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the internship advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language is an advantage.
