Eligibility criteria

Minimum age: 25 years old. Nationals of the country of assignment are not eligible, except the assignments in Headquarters duty stations.

Description of task

Under the direct supervision of Director, Rule of Law, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

  • Undertake complex research and analysis to support comparative legal analysis of national laws and policies to ensure compliance with international standards and recommended best practices;
  • Contribute to the preparation of themactic reports, code cables, policy papers, and other analytical work product on relevant to the section’s work;
  • Work closely with national authorities and other stakeholders to assist in promote stronger coorination of rule of law and security sector policy initiatives, including mapping of justice and security sector institutions and needs;
  • Prepare accurate notes to file on meetings, compile and maintain the section’s legal library and other resource materials, and review and comment on draft substantive legislation and regulations; and
  • Represent the section when necessary at working group meetings with national authorities and other counterparts.
Qualifications/Requirements Required degree level: Master degree or equivalent Education - Additional Comments:

Advanced university degree (master’s degree or equivalent) in law is required. A focus on transitional justice or international development is desirable. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Required experience: 36 Months Experience remark:

A minimum of three years professional legal experience outside of her/his country is required. Substantial experience in complex legal research, analysis, and writing is highly desirable. Experience in donor coordination of justice, security, or legal reform efforts is highly desirable. Experience in legislative drafting and substantive review is desirable.

Language skills:
  • English(Mandatory), Level - Fluent

  • Solid computer skills, including full proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.) is required.
  • Prior experience working in transitional justice environment in a conflict or post-conflict region is highly desirable.
