Background Information - Small Grants Cluster

Grant Management Services (GMS): GMS – previously named the Small Grants Programme (SGP) – is a one-stop shop for managing environmental programmes and projects through grants. Currently, the GMS operations is spread in around 120 countries. The GMS chief niche is to serve global programmes with its main partner UNDP-GEF, and other bilateral member states and donors. GMS has proven experience in grant management and considered as the gold standard for managing grants in UNOPS. It has pushed the boundaries of grantmaking through innovation and upscaling.

Functional Responsibilities

The Small Grants Programme (SGP) is a corporate program of the Global Environment Facility implemented by UNDP since 1992. SGP grantmaking in 119 countries promotes community-based innovation, capacity development, and empowerment through sustainable development projects of local civil society organizations with special consideration for indigenous peoples, women, and youth. Given the increasing requirements in Communications and knowledge management the Small Grants Programme is looking for an intern that can help to capture, produce and disseminate its results and knowledge using different media.

Under the direct supervision of the Communications and Knowledge Advisor, the intern will assist with evidence-based communications and knowledge management. In particular, the intern will provide support to the SGP Communications and Knowledge Adviser in the following:

  • Ensure visual branding standards and donor acknowledgements are followed by Country Programmes and partners
  • Maintain consistent messaging and language about the work of the programme
  • Research, write, fact-check and proofread internal and external communication texts, including news articles, reports, blogs, PowerPoint presentations, talking points and other content as required;
  • Support the production of SGP communication activities and products such as publications, videos, fact sheets, brochures and exhibition materials;
  • Help maintain and contribute to the annual editorial calendar;
  • Assist daily media monitoring by scanning online media for relevant news, interviews and articles mentioning of SGP grantees and relevant topics
  • Provide strategic support to facilitate the participation and promote visibility of SGP in global and regional events
  • Design and carry out targeted social media campaigns and track performance of key metrics
  • Write, schedule and track posts on SGP’s social media channels and increase engagement and follower base
  • Help produce regular newsletters and enhance its subscription base
  • Help maintain the newly revamped SGP global website, both by producing and curating content and suggesting technical improvements
  • Multimedia content: produce at least four 2-3 minute videos

Education/Experience/Language requirements

Education:
  • Currently enrolled in a university programme such as Bachelor, Masters or Ph.D. (or the equivalent) or have graduated from such studies within three (3) years prior to the applications date of the internship.
Experience:
  • Proven record of producing articles, blogs and communications products using software, online platforms and CMS (i.e. InDesign/Photoshop, MailChimp or other HTML editors, Drupal/WordPress, Vizualize and other infographic makers) is desired
  • Knowledge of social media management and monitoring: Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, Hootsuite, Union Metric, etc. is desired
Language:
  • Fluency in English is required (written and verbal)
