Organizational Setting

FAO Malawi assists governments to develop policies, programmes and projects to address hunger and malnutrition, and provides technical support for the sustainable development of their agricultural, fisheries and forestry sectors and to respond to crises. The Nutrition Specialist will be hired to provide technical support to all relevant projects implemented within FAO Malawi.

Reporting Lines

The Nutrition Specialist will be under the overall supervision of the FAO Representative, the Assistant FAOR (Programme) and the day-to-day supervision of the Head of Technical Section and close collaboration with relevant officers in the Project Coordination Section and the relevant Lead Technical Officers (LTO).

Technical Focus\:

The Nutrition Specialist will be the focal point for all FAO Malawi nutrition programming issues, supervise implementation of nutrition interventions and provide relevant technical guidance through close collaboration with government departments dealing with nutrition.

Tasks and responsibilities

The incumbent will work more specifically\:

  • Coordinate project/programme support during formulation and implementation of ongoing activities focusing on nutrition and nutrition sensitive agriculture.
  • Coordinate policy dialogue processes on nutrition with government, development partners, private sector and Civil Society Organizations.
  • Gather, analyse and disseminate relevant technical information, data and/or statistics on nutrition for input in various documents, studies, field projects, and/or assessments.
  • Ensure nutrition is mainstreamed in FAO’s project formulation, implementation and document best practices from field projects.
  • Collaborate in the development of training tools and materials on NSA, nutrition education and social behaviour communication tools, and marketing and advertising to promote healthy diets.
  • Strengthen integration of women’s empowerment in agriculture, and the enabling environment for nutrition, and reaching the most nutritionally vulnerable
  • Participate in monitoring and evaluation of nutrition projects/programmes.
  • Development and review of work plans, budgets and procurement plans related to nutrition activities.
  • Provide technical advice and guidance on technical specifications, evaluation and clearance of goods and services procured with support from FAO by working closely with the DHNA and other relevant departments.
  • Participate in technical working groups on nutrition on behalf of FAO.
  • Perform any other tasks as may be required.
CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING
Minimum Requirements
  • Advanced degree in nutrition, food systems, dietetics, agricultural development or closely related field from a recognized University.
  • At least 7 years of professional experience in the implementation and management of nutrition projects/programmes.
  • Working knowledge of English.

Technical/Functional Skills

  • Work experience in one or more of the technical fields (i.e. nutrition-sensitive agriculture, integrated food security and nutrition, nutrition education, agricultural marketing, food security and nutrition assessment; nutrition-sensitive social protection.)
  • Relevance of experience in nutrition-sensitive agriculture and food systems interventions;
  • Previous working experience in a technical advisory role working in an international global organization;
  • Demonstrated excellence in oral and written presentation skills in English.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well within multi-sector and multi-agency working groups;
  • A strong and in-depth field knowledge and experience in nutrition-sensitive agriculture and food systems interventions.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
