Company Description

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact and provide insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

Job Description

Introduction

Are you a skilled electronics engineer, with experience in programmable logic, looking to stretch yourself and take on a new challenge? Join CERN’s Electrical Power Converter group and contribute to the converter controls electronics team in the design and realization of converter controls electronics. CERN, take Part!

You will join the Technology Department (TE), the Electrical Power Converter Group (TE-EPC), responsible for power converters throughout the CERN accelerator complex and the Converter Controls Electronics Section (TE-EPC-CCE), which designs and realizes the electronic control systems for CERN’s power converters.

A short video giving an overview of the power converters group role within CERN is available here https://videos.cern.ch/record/2688929 and more information about the technology department can be found on the website here http://te-dep.web.cern.ch/

Functions

As an electronics engineer, you will become part of the controls electronics section, working in collaboration with other sections and group members to create electronic boards used in power converter controls.

Your functions will be to:

  • Design and prototype complex digital and programmable electronics.
  • Design modular programmable electronic device IP cores in a common framework.
  • Participate in the Electronics Working Group to gather requirements and present solutions.
  • Document electronic boards to improve maintenance and user experience.
  • Define the structure of and administer code versioning systems.
  • Perform tests, commissioning, and operation of controls electronics, working with others to solve problems, taking part in the on-call service for converter controls.

Qualifications

Master's degree or equivalent relevant experience in the field of Electronic Engineering or a related field.

Experience:

  • Proven experience in designing and developing system solutions from user requirements down through to bit-level implementation.
  • Demonstrated experience developing digital electronic modules, by using CAD tools such as Altium Designer, or an equivalent.
  • Proven experience in the design and realization of electronics based on Field-Programmable Gate Arrays and/or Programmable Logic Devices, using the Xilinx toolchain, Microsemi toolchain, or equivalent.
  • Proven ability in programmable logic design using VHDL, and simulation using Modelsim or an equivalent.
  • Experience with code versioning systems, using GIT, would be an advantage.
  • Experience with the test, commissioning/operation of electronic systems would be an advantage.

Technical competencies:

  • Design and simulation of digital electronic circuits.
  • Testing and measurement of digital electronic circuits.
  • Design and development of systems based on standardized modules.
