We are looking for a skilled professional who is deeply passionate about nonprofit governance and can contribute to best practice governance content and provide high quality advice to our stakeholders to help deepen awareness and engagement in support of safeguarding our mission.

UNICEF works in over 190 countries and territories to save children's lives, to defend their rights, and to help them fulfill their potential, from early childhood through adolescence. As a division of UNICEF, the Private Fundraising and Partnerships Division (PFP), based in Geneva, Switzerland, is responsible for managing UNICEF’s relationship with 33 National Committees for UNICEF. National Committees are independent nongovernmental organizations that engage in fundraising, partnerships and child rights advocacy for UNICEF in their countries.

PFP’s Governance Team was set up in 2008 to develop UNICEF’s strategy for and provide leadership on UNICEF’s governance and  oversight agenda with National Committees. The Team leads PFP’s strategic governance guidance and support programme to strengthen governance structures and processes in National Committees with the objective to continually develop board effectiveness, reinforce accountabilities, ensure an appropriate ethical environment, institute well-governed management processes and procedures, increase
transparency, maintain effective risk and crisis management processes, and ensure compliance and internal controls. The PFP’s Chief of Governance is also responsible for coordination of Divisional risk management.

Purpose of the Job:

This Temporary Appointment (International P-3 level) tentatively from April 2020 to November 2020 is a maternity leave replacement to support a continued governance guidance to and implementation of UNICEF’s agenda by National Committees across all governance subject matters.

Under the leadership and guidance of the PFP’s Chief of Governance, the National Committee and Governance Specialist will be responsible to devise optimized governance implementation support to National Committees, to support and monitor National Committees’ progress against governance objectives; and to support coordination of PFP’s internal risk management. The position is office-based, involving occasional travel.

How can you make a difference?

MAIN TASKS:

The incumbent will support the PFP’s Chief of Governance in carrying out the following responsibilities:
 
1. Providing strategic guidance in reviews and development of joint strategic plans, supporting implementation and monitoring in governance areas in assigned National Committees and supporting the PFP’s Chief of Governance with other National Committees as required.
 
Providing technical support to individual National Committees in a wide variety of governance areas under the five areas of the agreed governance principles (including but not limited to supporting developing or reviewing Statutes/by-laws, providing advice on audit-related structures and processes, providing advice on ethics policies and procedures, and more), in support of the implementation of governance objectives agreed with National Committees.
 
2. Supporting coordination of PFP’s risk management exercises, including reporting.
 
3. Supporting through research and writing, the updating and development of guidance and information in relevant governance areas to be agreed with Supervisor.

DELIVERABLES:

  • Guidance and technical support provided to allocated National Committees (and support to PPF’s Chief of Governance with other National Committee, as required), and related reporting completed.
  • Completion of PFP’s mid-year risk exercise supported.
  • Select guidance documents and information materials researched and updated.

Estimated Duration of the contract:

  • 7.5 months, tentatively starting early April 2020

REPORTING TO:

  • The incumbent will report to PFP’s Chief of Governance, who will provide overall direction, guidance and senior level decision-making. The incumbent will provide support and advice to the supervisor and while s/he will work with a high degree of independence, is expected to regularly share information and advise the supervisor of emerging problem areas and issues.

Education:

  • An advanced university degree in law, business, corporate governance, audit, or other related fields is required.
  • A first level university degree in a relevant field combined with 7 years of professional experience may be
    accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree.

Experience:

  • Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible professional experience at the international level in law, audit, not-for-profit or corporate governance is required.
  • Experience in risk management, and knowledge and information management are an asset.
  • Knowledge of UNICEF and the unique National Committee structure is an asset.
* Technical expertise includes:
  • Knowledge of concepts related to organizational (especially nonprofit) governance structures and processes globally, and of latest developments and practical aspects of nonprofit governance areas, including embedding risk management into organizational cultures.
