Youth, Education and Advocacy Assistant

Eligibility criteria

Minimum age: 22 years old. Applicants must be nationals of or legal residents in the country of assignment.

Description of task

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of the Chief of the Youth, Education and Advocacy Unit or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the UN Volunteer in the Youth, Education and Advocacy Unit will:

1) Formal Education Support:

  • Support the growth of partnerships and delivery of work being done with higher education partners.
  • Support specific Youth and Education Alliance (YEA!) projects such as rolling out the pilot campus project for the Little Book of Green Nudges and advancing the higher education advocacy agenda.
  • Assist in the compilation of monthly highlights and the drafting of a newsletter to be disseminated among Alliance members on a regular basis.
  • Support Youth and Education Alliance activities and outreach as and when required.

2) Advocacy Support:

  • Support on the follow-up of the advocacy work of the Division’s four task teams.
  • Support on research related to the Division’s four priority areas.
  • Support on the drafting of advocacy products including letters and briefing notes

3) Communication Support:

  • Support on internal communications, including the Division’s newsletter and organizing events.
  • Support on the coordination of the Division’s external communication efforts.
  • Support on the drafting of various written materials, such as op-eds and web stories.

4) Support other projects as / when required:

  • Support the team on key projects as and when required.
Qualifications/Requirements Required degree level: Bachelor degree or equivalent Education - Additional Comments:
  • University degree (Bachelor’s or equivalent) in a relevant area e.g. Political Science, Communications or Education in an international context and with a strong track record of project management and delivery. In addition, relevant training and/or professional experience is highly recommended;
Required experience: 24 Months Experience remark:
  • At least 2 years of professional work experience at the national/or international level working in a university environment with insight as to how to work with such institutions around the tasks described above, or other relevant programmes; as is experience working in the UN or other international development organization;
  • Knowledge of project design: a strong track record of designing projects that secure buy-in and generate results (essential), project management: able to deliver highly complex projects of a global nature efficiently and effectively;
  • Excellent oral and written skills – strong writer of stories and proposals that support the agenda of the week, excellent drafting, formulation, reporting skills, and able to bring diverse group of individuals and partners together to agree a collective programme of work as well as able to write high quality reports and proposals as required.;
  • Accuracy and professionalism in document production and editing;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, culturally and socially sensitive, ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners, including grassroots community members, religious and youth organizations, and authorities at different levels; familiarity with tools and approaches of communications for development;
  • Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment, ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel;
  • Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word, etc) and email/internet; familiarity with database management; and office technology equipment, ability to think creatively about how to evolve pre-existing programmes to have maximum impact;
  • Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision, ability to work with tight deadlines;
  • Sound security awareness;
  • Have affinity with or interest in Advocacy, volunteerism as a mechanism for durable development, and the UN system
