(a) increase understanding of relevant issues at the international level by involving them directly in the work of the Office and the application of ILO principles, programmes and strategies;

(b) gain practical experience with the ILO directly related to their field of study.

The internship programme is not intended to lead to a career in the ILO. There should be no expectation of further employment at the end of the internship.

Department

The position is located in the Research Department of the ILO (RESEARCH). The departments work is targeted to further the body of knowledge in explore the future of work, SDGs, global and regional trends which conducts research on global labour markets, macro- and socio-economic questions with a view to identifying policy options that can promote a more sustainable and fairer globalization. The position will support research at the ILO on the world of work as well as on other social and labour-related outcomes at the micro and macro level. This includes a multi-dimensional analysis of economic, institutional and political settings that have factored into the world of work. The position requires a strong ability to identify and assess relevant policies and convey the main findings of the work in a clear, succinct manner to a non-technical audience. It also includes building external networks with researchers, academic and policy-oriented institutions to engage them in the department's work and contribute to developing research proposals.

Learning area

As an intern in the Research Department, you will be exposed to a whole range of areas such as:

Support research activities and contribute to policy reports;

Construct and maintain databases and their sources for the empirical work conducted in the unit;

Analyse global and national policy choices and their impact on labour market outcomes ;

Provide literature reviews and background research on relevant topics;

Prepare and deliver presentations of work achievements to internal audiences.

 

You would be gaining experience in working with specialists who are involved in tasks such as evaluating labour market policies, setting up country labour market profiles, analysing labour market implications of macro-economic trends, understanding the impact of trade and technology on jobs and job quality, examining the implications of the transition to a greener economy for labour markets.

 

Interns should expect to devote 10% to 20% of their time to administrative tasks.

Required profile
Education

Advanced university degree in economics or other social science. The candidate should be enrolled in their final year of graduate degree programme or should have completed such a programme no longer than 1 year ago.

Experience

Relevant academic or professional experience in research, data management and statistical analysis would be an advantage.

Languages

Excellent command of English (knowledge of French, Spanish or Arabic would be considered an advantage).

Competencies

Adaptable to an international, multicultural and multilingual environment, good communication skills and ability to work in a team. Strong analytical capabilities with the ability to quickly comprehend new subject matters and their policy implications.  Ability to carry out assignments in accordance with instructions and guidelines, ability to use analytical tools and qualitative and quantitative techniques, ability to conceptualize, plan, coordinate and conduct straightforward research work, ability to draft press releases, discussion papers, reports, good computer skills. Excellent knowledge of office and statistical software such as MS Office, LaTeX, STATA, MATLAB or R.

Selection process:

 

Following a first screening by the Human Resources Development Department (HRD), hiring departments will short-list applicants. You will be directly contacted should an internship opportunity match your profile. If you have not been contacted by any department within six months after your application, you can consider that you have not been selected by any department for this roster. If still eligible, you may apply to the next roster. 

 

If shortlisted, you may be contacted by the hiring department for a written test and/or interview. The ILO may use communication technologies such as Skype, Video or teleconference, e-mail, etc for the assessment and evaluation of candidates.

 

Stipend:

 

As an intern in Geneva, you will receive a stipend of 2245 CHF per month from the ILO, unless you receive funding through another institution (for example your university or a foundation). If you receive partial funding, ILO will cover the difference to ensure you receive 2245 CHF per month. Your travel to Geneva will be at your own expense.

 

Insurance:

 

Please note that the ILO does not take responsibility for any costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during the internship. You will be responsible for your own insurance coverage for illness and accidents for the duration of the internship at the duty station (whether Geneva or the field).
