ILO Internship Programme provides an opportunity for talented individuals to:

(a) increase understanding of relevant issues at the international level by involving them directly in the work of the Office and the application of ILO principles, programmes and strategies;

(b) gain practical experience with the ILO directly related to their field of study.

The internship programme is not intended to lead to a career in the ILO. There should be no expectation of further employment at the end of the internship.

Department

The Research Department of the ILO is a centre for advanced studies that fosters a better understanding of the future of work, the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and global and regional trends in economies and labour markets. The Research Department therefore undertakes multi-dimensional analysis of economic, institutional and political settings in several broad research programs and it identifies policy approaches that help to boost sustainable economic growth, promote job creation and employment and improve social outcomes.

Learning areas

The intern will contribute to the programme on new technologies, productive transformation and jobs. The aim of this program is to better understand how newly emerging technologies such as robots, 3Dprinting, Big Data and artificial intelligence will affect jobs in different industries and in different countries. While research so far has focused largely on developed countries, the risks and opportunities for developing countries are not well understood. The research project will be implemented in collaboration with other organisations and Universities, as well as with ILO’s offices in Asia, Latin America and Africa.

 

The intern will contribute to this work programme in different ways:

 

1. Contribute to conceptual and empirical research.

  • Prepare literature surveys
  • Participate in the design of case studies
  • Undertake data analysis using data sets provided by different organisations
  • Prepare graphs, tables and background notes
  • Present research findings in department seminars in the ILO
  • Assist in coordination and communication with external research partners

 

2. Dissemination of research findings and policy recommendations

  • Assist in organising workshops and seminars to discuss research findings
  • Contribute to drafting reports synthesising the findings of case studies and research papers
  • Co-author working papers and policy briefs

 

3. Undertake other duties and activities as may be assigned by the supervisor

 

Training will be provided in the work process through guidance, discussion and feedback by the supervisor and interaction with experts.

 

The intern will :

  • Become familiar with ILO’s mandate
  • Learn about ILO’s tripartite institutional structure
  • Develop in-depth knowledge on ILO’s policy
  • Gain experience in conducting applied research, develop capacities to draft reports, present findings and communicate in an international environment
  • Enhance his/her organizational skills and the capacity to work within an international team
  • Gain technical knowledge and competences in the area of new technology, innovation and jobs which is expected to increase rapidly in relevance in the near future.

 

Interns should expect to devote 10% to 20% of their time to administrative tasks.

Required profile
Education

Advanced university degree in economics. The candidate should be enrolled in their final year of graduate degree programme (Master) or in a PhD programme, or should have completed such a programme no longer than 1 year ago.

Experience

Relevant experience in research, data management and statistical analysis would be an advantage.

Languages

Excellent command of English (knowledge of French or Spanish would be an advantage).

Competencies

Adaptable to an international, multicultural and multilingual environment, good communication skills and ability to work in teams.

Strong analytical capabilities and ability to conceptualize, plan, coordinate.

Ability to use analytical tools and qualitative and quantitative techniques;

Excellent knowledge of office and statistical software such as MS Office, LaTeX, STATA, MATLAB or R.

Selection process:

 

Following a first screening by the Human Resources Development Department (HRD), hiring departments will short-list applicants. You will be directly contacted should an internship opportunity match your profile. If you have not been contacted by any department within six months after your application, you can consider that you have not been selected by any department for this roster. If still eligible, you may apply to the next roster. 

 

If shortlisted, you may be contacted by the hiring department for a written test and/or interview. The ILO may use communication technologies such as Skype, Video or teleconference, e-mail, etc for the assessment and evaluation of candidates.

 

Stipend:

 

As an intern in Geneva, you will receive a stipend of 2245 CHF per month from the ILO, unless you receive funding through another institution (for example your university or a foundation). If you receive partial funding, ILO will cover the difference to ensure you receive 2245 CHF per month. Your travel to Geneva will be at your own expense.

 

Insurance:

 

Please note that the ILO does not take responsibility for any costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during the internship. You will be responsible for your own insurance coverage for illness and accidents for the duration of the internship at the duty station (whether Geneva or the field).
