Job Description

Are you a technician looking for a challenging professional experience to further your career?  If so, joining CERN’s TTE programme may very well give you that challenge.  This position as a Mechanical Technician is part of our prestigious TTE programme. 

The Target, Collimators and Dumps section (part of the Sources, Targets and Interactions group) in the Engineering Department is in charge of the conceptual design, construction, operation and maintenance of special components having direct interaction with high-energy particle beams, so called “beam-intercepting devices”. Such devices are installed across the CERN’s accelerator complex, including particle-producing targets, beam absorbers/dumps, collimators, beam stoppers and slits.


Functions

As   Mechanical Technician, you will:

  • Support the various technical activities associated with the Beam Intercepting Devices managed by the section, among which conceptual design, assembly, installation and maintenance of targets, collimators and dumps. 
  • Support the LHC Injection dump design and assembly as well as the spare qualification, participate in the prototyping phase and follow-up on the procurement of various components. 
  • Ensure the appropriate link with the equipment control group (electronic control) as well as with the survey team for precise alignment of the devices.
  • Be involved in the routine maintenance as well as in the redesign and consolidation activities in the accelerator complex.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for a place on the programme you will need to meet the following requirements:

  • You are a national of a CERN Member State or Associate Member State (https://home.cern/about/member-states);
  • You have a Technical Diploma in the field of mechanics or equivalent (careers.cern/ttediplomas), and no more than 4 years' relevant experience after finishing your diploma;
  • If you are currently studying, you are still eligible to apply, although you are expected to have obtained your qualification by the start of your appointment at CERN;
  • If you hold a BSc or MSc, you are not eligible. However, you may be eligible for the Fellowship Programme.
  • You should have at least a working knowledge of English or French.

Specific skills required for this job:

Experience in:

  • Using CAD systems such as CATIA
  • Machining, assembling and testing precision mechanics
  • Reading mechanical design drawings and specifications in terms of tolerance.
  • Mechatronics implementation and execution
