IRC Background: The IRC in Northern California services over 1000 newly arriving refugees per year and has four offices all offering immigration services to the refugee and immigration communities in which they are located (Oakland, San Jose, Turlock/ Modesto and Sacramento).
Job Overview: The Civics Instructor will plan and provide civics training to Lawful Permanent Residents with an emphasis on preparing for naturalization specifically for the USCIS grant held by the Turlock/ Modesto IRC office. Additionally, this position provides support to the Turlock/ Modesto classroom instructor for VESL job readiness classes and provides orientation, training, and supervision to volunteer classroom aides or tutors as applicable. This is a non-exempt position. This position reports directly to the Immigration Casework Coordinator in Turlock. Classes may be offered at multiple times and at differing sites to best meet clients’ needs.
Major Responsibilities:
CIVICS EDUCATION LEAD
•Plan and develop a Civics class curriculum tailored to the needs of the Turlock immigrant community. Establish a regular class schedule. Develop daily lesson plans one week in advance. Coordinate with, and submit class curriculum outlines prior to the start of each class cycle to, the Casework Coordinator, the Immigration Manager in Northern California, and the national Immigration Program director
•Conduct pre and posttest and submit students’ progress report as appropriate
•Ensure that information required for eligibility and reporting purposes is collected. Maintain accurate attendance records and submit monthly attendance reports to Caseworker Supervisor and Casework Coordinator on a regular basis
•Coordinate classroom activities. Monitor student progress regularly. Provide referrals to appropriate services to students with special needs (literacy, learning impairments, etc.)
•Conduct outreach activities like attending tabling events, preparing flyers, positing on social media, meeting with community partners, etc to recruit new students for the Citizenship Class, as needed
•Collect and report on data of class attendance and testing results for grant outcomes tracking and ofice reports.
VESL EDUCATOIN DUTIES
•Provide guidance to VESL instructor for job readiness trainings (I took out word supervision after I considered it more)
•Review curriculum to ensure best TESOL practice.
•Visits and monitor classroom activities
•Provide VESL instruction in classroom as needed
GENERAL DUTIES
•Attend staff meeting
•Comply with requirements of the funders and IRC policies
•Perform other duties as needed
