OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST

Under the direct supervision of the UNESCO Regional Office for Southern Africa Social and Human Sciences (SHS) Programme Specialist, the Projects Coordinator will be responsible for three workstream : (i) Contributing to the implementation of the UNESCO/SHS Programmes on Social Inclusion and MOST in the region; (ii) Advising and coordinating interventions on emergency and humanitarian responses in the area of inclusion of the most vulnerable; and (iii) Supporting resource mobilsiation efforts of the Sector in the Social inclusion workstream.

Long Description
  • Contribute to the Sector’s efforts in mobilizing new partnerships and fund-raising under the MOST and Social Inclusion Programmes, by building on the results of the UNPRPD project, and developing concept notes and prodocs, applying to Calls for projects at the national and global levels, and liaising with the local, regional and international partners/donors.
  • Ensure the day-to-day management of the Social Inclusion and MOST Programmes in consultation with the Programme Specialist, and with national partners to develop new areas of work to strengthen the portfolio.
  • Working on the follow-up of UNESCO’s assets in the area of disability rights, especially in the context of emergency and humanitarian response pertaining notably to the COVID-19 response and recovery. Liaise with the concerned UN agencies, Disabled Persons Organizations (DPOs), UNPRPD, and other MPTF mechanisms to position UNESCO’s interventions in joint initiatives and ensure synergies and partnerships.
  • Streamline the Gender work of the Sector in the region by proposing new ideas of interventions that are relevant to the Sector’s mandate, including on the intersectional discrimination and violence.
  • Ensure UNESCO’s presence and contribution to the UN technical working groups’ meetings and initiatives under the UNDAF/UN Sustainable Development Framework (UNSDF)/CCA process, notably by bringing technical support in integrating the UNDIS into the CCA process.
  • Assist in the development of an appropriate communication and information strategy to support and/or advocate programme development, in line with the Donor’s and UNESCO’s strategy to ensure the visibility of the interventions and ensure accountability.
  • Perform any other duties, relevant to the project, as required.

  • Knowledge and/or prior experience of the United Nations and UNESCO System
  • Literacy in computing, information management, website and social media
  • Fluency in any one of the 15 Constitutional languages is an asset
  • Proven ability to work in a multicultural environment
  • Ability to write clear and comprehensive reports
  • High level written and oral communications skills in English and any other UN language
  • Must be a result oriented team player
  • Good interpersonal skills

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Holder of a Master’s degree in a relevant discipline (development, human rights, social sciences, etc.).
