Organizational Setting

The Statistics Division develops, and advocates for the implementation of methodologies and standards for data collection, validation, processing and analysis of food and agriculture statistics. In these statistical domains, it also plays a vital role in the compilation, processing and dissemination of internationally comparable data, and provides essential capacity building support to member countries. In addition, the Division disseminates many publications, working papers and statistical yearbooks, that cover agricultural and food security relevant statistics (including prices, investments, production, trade and agri-environmental statistical data).
The incumbent will work for the Office of the Chief Statistician that ensures effective coordination of all FAO statistical programmes, and corporate consistency and alignment of statistical practices at headquarters and in the field. Its work programme focuses on\: designing the FAO Statistical Programme of Work and monitoring its implementation; the coordination and quality assurance of all statistical activities carried out by the Organization, and the development and monitoring of the FAO-relevant SDG indicators.

Reporting Lines

The Statistician reports to the Chief Statistician.

Technical Focus

The incumbent will be responsible for providing technical support in the preparation and implementation of the programme of work in the area of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) indicators

Key Results

Research and analysis of information, data and statistics, and the maintenance and updating of related tools, methodologies, and/or databases to support the delivery of programme products, projects, publications, and services

Key Functions

• Researches and analyzes [agricultural, economic, trade, market, social, environmental, nutrition/food composition and/or gender related] data, statistics and information to provide technical, statistical and/or policy related information and analysis to support the delivery of economic and social development programmes work, products, projects, publications and services.
• Produces a variety of technical reports and input for technical documents, Departmental publications and/or web pages.
• Provides technical, statistical, and/or analytical services on various studies, projects, and/or assessments and provides technical backstopping to field projects.
• Participates in the development of improved/updated technical, statistical and/or analytical tools, methodologies, systems, databases, and/or key social/ economic/ environmental/ nutritional and/or early warning indicators, etc.
• Participates on multi-disciplinary teams, collaborates with other departments and agencies on work groups and committees and promotes best practices.
• Collaborates in capacity development activities involving the planning and organizing of training workshops, seminars, and major meetings and the preparation of related information, materials, on-line tools and information kits.
• Promotes knowledge sharing and best practices at international meetings and conferences and influences partners in stakeholder consultations.
• Participates in resource mobilization activities

Specific Functions

• Collects, analyses, compiles and disseminates data and information related to the Sustainable Development Goals indicators under FAO custodianship in accordance with applicable standards and timetables;
• Supports the global process for the development, review and implementation of the SDG indicators under FAO custodianship and strategic coordination on data reporting for the 2030 Agenda, including the work of the Inter Agency Expert Group on Sustainable Development Goals indicator and High-Level Group-Partnership, Coordination and Capacity Building;
• Contributes to the development, maintenance and enhancement of FAO's Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) indicator portal, by performing ongoing reviews of its content in terms of data, metadata, functionality and country coverage and suggest and implement improvements;
• Participates in the development or revision of statistical standards on methods, definitions and classifications for the compilation of the SDG indicators and for the assessment of progress towards the SDG targets, by coordinating with relevant internal and external stakeholders;
• Supports countries in assessing SDG data gaps and in mainstreaming SDG data production/dissemination in national statistics plans;
• Provides technical assistance to countries in the development, monitoring and reporting of SDG indicators.
• Organizes global symposia, regional workshops and national training activities on Sustainable Development Goal indicators;
• Contributes to resource mobilization in the area of statistics and SDG indicator monitoring.
• Prepares technical documents for international, intergovernmental and expert group meetings and assists in drafting analytical reports on assessing progress towards the SDG targets;
• Develops and maintains contacts with counterparts in national statistical offices, international organizations and other relevant national, regional and international institutions with a view to fostering the implementation of SDG indicators

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements

• Advanced university degree in statistics, mathematics, economics, agricultural economics or a related field;
• Five years of relevant experience in the compilation and analysis of food and agricultural statistics in national or international organizations;
• Working knowledge of English and limited knowledge of another FAO official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish).

Technical/Functional Skills

• Work experience in more than one location or area of work, particularly in field positions is desirable
• Extent and relevance of experience and knowledge of the main data sources and statistical methods used for the compilation, validation and analysis of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) indicators
• Extent and relevance of experience in coordinating complex statistical capacity development initiatives and in providing technical assistance to countries for the implementation of SDG indicators
• Demonstrated analytical skills and ability to draft technical reports, analytical documents and flagship publications
• Extent and relevance of experience in using statistical software for data processing and analysis
• Extent and relevance of experience in liaising with national/international stakeholders and in coordinating networks/working groups
