Eligibility criteria

Minimum age: 25 years old. Nationals of the country of assignment are not eligible, except the assignments in Headquarters duty stations.

Description of task

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of Global Climate Change Advisor or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the UN Volunteer Data Analyst will:

  • Support the data entry, maintenance, validation and clean up of the climate promise database and dashboard of the Promise, drawing on a number of sources (climate promise country workplans, UNDP climate portfolio dataset, NDC registry and other relevant public NDC content database)
  • Identify key trends, defining critical questions/queries and designing structured analysis based on raw datasets and complex databases
  • Generate visuals and charts based on analysis of existing data for dashboard, promise progress reports, knowledge products and other communications and advocacy materials; and
  • Support identification of lessons and results of climate promise based on analysis of data gathered in the database, working closely with the communications team.

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are encouraged to integrate the UN Volunteers programme mandate within their assignment and promote voluntary action through engagement with communities in the course of their work. As such, UN Volunteers should dedicate a part of their working time to some of the following suggested activities:

  • Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day);
  • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country;
  • Provide annual and end of assignment self- reports on UN Volunteer actions, results and opportunities.
  • Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.;
  • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers; and
  • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.
Qualifications/Requirements Required degree level: Bachelor degree or equivalent Education - Additional Comments:
  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental sciences, development studies, international development, economics, natural resources management or other closely related field
  • Master’s degree in these related fields is an advantage.

  • Demonstrated professional experience working on analysing complex datasets related to development and environment issues;
  • Demonstrated ability to generate data-driven products (e.g. graphs, charts, infographics) from raw databases and datasets;
  • Demonstrated hands on experience and knowledge of using Power BI, Ms Excel and Power Point to analyse and present complex dataset;
  • Fluency in oral and written communications and presentations skills in English.

Desirable experience/skills:

  • Professional experience working in development policy and programmes in UNDP and/or UN agencies;
  • Experience and knowledge on climate change policy related issues especially around Nationally Determined Contributions under the Paris Agreement;
  • Knowledge on UN and/or experience working with the UN, with familiarity with the mandate and operations of UNDP;
  • Experience working in French, Spanish or other UN languages;
  • Ability to provide guidance on communications campaigns and strategies;
  • Knowledge of methodologies, tools, and platforms to plan, monitor, and evaluate communications products;
  • Understanding of social media platforms and their varying effectiveness across different geographical regions and different demographics and audiences;
  • Ability to efficiently handle and share information and knowledge;
  • Ability to plan, organize, motivate, and control resources, procedures and protocols to achieve specific goals;
  • Knowledge of energy and climate change mitigation issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to work across different teams and organisations, and build partnerships to leverage impact of communications campaigns;
