The Experimental Areas Group in the Engineering Department is responsible for the beamline and management of CERN’s experimental areas, for which it also provides support in the activities of design, installation, commissioning and maintenance.
You will join a the The Advanced Proton Driven Plasma Wakefield Acceleration Experiment (AWAKE): the world’s first proton-driven plasma wakefield acceleration experiment! As well as demonstrating how protons can be used to generate wakefields, it will also develop the necessary technologies for long-term, proton-driven plasma acceleration projects.
AWAKE explores the use of plasma to accelerate particles to high energies over short distances by means of a dedicated proton beam line and its associated experimental area of the CERN Super Proton Sychrotron complex. (Discover more on cern.ch/awake).
Following the ongoing successful first phase of the experiment, the AWAKE project has started a study for preparing for the second phase. In this context, you will join the AWAKE team in charge of “integration, installation and infrastructure”. After a period of familiarization, you will participate in activities for both phases, where the percentage spent on either can be adapted to your profile and aptitude:
- 1. For the operation of the ongoing first phase, you will participate in the experiment coordination and you will organize activities linked to the facility’s infrastructure.
- 2. For the design of the future second phase of AWAKE, you will participate in the design studies of the infrastructure as well as in the preparation of the first dismantling works.
In order to qualify for a place on the programme you will need to meet the following requirements:
- You are a national of a CERN Member State or Associate Member State (https://home.cern/about/member-states);
- You have a technical diploma in Mechanics,, Electromechanics, Mechatronics or related fields (careers.cern/ttediplomas), and no more than 4 years' relevant experience after finishing your diploma;
- If you are currently studying, you are still eligible to apply, although you are expected to have obtained your qualification by the start of your appointment at CERN;
- If you hold a BSc or MSc, you are not eligible. However you may be eligible for the Fellowship Programme.
- You should have at least a working knowledge of English or French.
Specific skills required for this job:
- Experience in using 3D & 2D technical drawing
- Experience in electromechanical systems design and construction
- Experience in installation and maintenance of electromechanical systems
- Quality and documentation management
Relevant behavioural skills:

You will be able to:
- Learn the most recent technologies applied to beam line components and associated infrastructure (collimator, lasma cell, laser, electron beam, beam stoppers, vacuum, control systems, alarms and safety systems, remote handling, cooling and ventilation, electricity).
- Integrate complex systems to respect today's norms and best practices for radiation protection, standardize beam line & detector.
- Develop Safety & Project and Quality management skills.

- An employment contract of one year, renewable for a second year;
- On-the-job and formal training at CERN as well as in-house language courses for English and/or French;
- A monthly stipend of 4565 Swiss Francs per month (net of tax);

- Depending on your individual circumstances: an installation grant, family, child and infant allowances as well as travel expenses to and from Geneva;
