Mechanical Technician for Beam Intercepting Devices (TTE Programme)

The Sources, Targets and Interactions section (STI), in the Engineering Department, oversees the conceptual design, construction, operation and maintenance of all beam-intercepting devices across CERN’s accelerator complex, including particle-producing targets, beam absorbers/dumps, collimators, beam stoppers and slits. The Group is also responsible for the technical coordination of related facilities such as the Neutron-Time-of-Flight (n_TOF) and the Antiproton Target (ADT) areas.
Equipment under the responsibility of the Group need to safely absorb beams from extremely low energy (45 keV) up to extremely high energy (7 TeV), with kinetic energies up to 350 MJ and with average power reaching up to 400 kW.
You will join the team in charge of the conception, technical design, assembly, installation and maintenance of the beam intercepting devices (BIDs) managed by the TCD section. Depending on the particular project you will be joining, you will:
- Participate in the conception, technical design and assembly activities for new and upgraded components, such as spallation targets, stoppers, slits, internal and external beam dumps and experimental devices;
- Be involved in the routine maintenance and consolidation activities of equipment for the LHC accelerator complex, for the injector complex and/or for other facilities at CERN;
- Provide mechanical and logistics support to the n_TOF and AD-target facilities in collaboration with the respective Technical Coordinators; tasks are associated to the daily operation, technical problem-solving, preparation of upgrades for the facility and for different experimental activities executed in the respective installation.
In order to qualify for a place on the programme you will need to meet the following requirements:
- You are a national of a CERN Member State or Associate Member State (https://home.cern/about/member-states);
- You have a Technical Diploma (careers.cern/ttediplomas) in the field of mechanics or equivalent, and no more than 4 years' relevant experience after finishing your diploma;
- If you are currently studying, you are still eligible to apply, although you are expected to have obtained your qualification by the start of your appointment at CERN;
- If you hold a BSc or MSc, you are not eligible. However you may be eligible for the Fellowship Programme.
- You should have at least a working knowledge of English or French.

- An employment contract of one year, renewable for a second year;
- On-the-job and formal training at CERN as well as in-house language courses for English and/or French;
- A monthly stipend of 4565 Swiss Francs per month (net of tax);

- Depending on your individual circumstances: an installation grant, family, child and infant allowances as well as travel expenses to and from Geneva;
- 2,5 days of paid leave per month.
Specific skills required for this job:
- Experience in using CAD systems such as CATIA
- Experience in machining, assembling and testing of precision mechanics
- Experience in reading mechanical design drawings and specifications in terms of tolerance (ISO tolerancing system).
