Organizational Setting

The Director General's Office (DGO) provides leadership and coordination for all IAEA activities at the executive level for meeting Member States' needs, and achieving a one-house approach and a results-based management.The Office for Public Information and Communication provides objective, accurate and timely information about the IAEA and nuclear developments that fosters public understanding of the IAEA's global roles. It also provides advice to the Director General on relations with the media and organizes press briefings. The Office coordinates the communication activities for the rest of the house and assists in the media aspects of major IAEA events and conferences.The Media, Multimedia and Public Outreach Section has corporate responsibility for relations with the media and the public, as well as for producing audio and video materials to promote the IAEA’s activities.


Main Purpose

The Press and Public Information Officer actively supports the spokesperson and senior IAEA staff in generating news stories highlighting IAEA activities and increasing knowledge and understanding of nuclear issues. She/he is also actively involved in other outreach activities to increase media and public awareness of the IAEA’s work.


Role

The Press and Public Information Officer is\: 1) a media strategist fostering accurate and prominent coverage of the IAEA and increasing public awareness of its wide range of activities in support of health, prosperity and security around the world 2) a media expert and writer handling requests for information and developing responses to help journalists better understand the IAEA's function and role; and 3) A communications expert holding lectures about the IAEA and organising other public events in order to achieve greater awareness of different aspects of the Agency’s work.


Functions / Key Results Expected

  • Contribute to accurate, balanced and objective reporting about IAEA activities by organizing interviews and press briefings for journalists and working closely with senior staff in crafting talking points and messages. 
  • Improve understanding and increase awareness of IAEA activities by writing press releases and media advisories, and by providing regular briefings to the media. 
  • Help drive strategic external communications policy by devising and managing proactive press campaigns as well as promoting key events and issues in the media. 
  • Propose/organise events that would prompt better public/media awareness of the IAEA and its activities.
    Holds public lectures on the Agency’s activities.

Qualifications, Experience and Language skills

  • At least an advanced university degree in journalism, international relations, non-proliferation studies or a related field.
  • At least seven years of practical work experience in a journalism or international organization press office environment.
  • Experience of working on international issues.
  • Experience in research or writing in the field of nuclear-related issues is an asset.
  • Excellent oral and written command of English. Knowledge of other official IAEA languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish) is an asset.

Remuneration

The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $73516 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance), a variable post adjustment which currently amounts to US $ 33891, dependency benefits, rental subsidy, education grant, relocation and repatriation expenses; 6 weeks' annual vacation, home leave, pension plan and health insurance
