This is a paid internship (part-time) based in Salvador Field Office. The UNICEF Internship Programme offers qualified and eligible students at both Headquarters (HQ) and Country Offices (CO) the unique opportunity to acquire direct practical experience in UNICEF's work and the United Nations system under the direct supervision of experienced UNICEF staff.

Purpose of the internship:

UNICEF Brazil country programme (2017-2021) includes four major programmatic areas of focus: (1) social inclusion; (2) strengthening public policies to better reach the most vulnerable; (3) protection from the worst forms of violence; and (4) citizen (including adolescent) engagement.

At field level, UNICEF Brazil utilizes two major initiatives to achieve results for children: the UNICEF Municipal Seal and the Urban Centers initiative. The UNICEF Seal has been implemented with UNICEF leadership for the past 15 years. Over 1,900 municipalities are enrolled in the current edition (2017-2020) of the UNICEF Seal, including 1,280 from 9 states in the Semi-Arid Territory. The UNICEF Seal is the most important programme that UNICEF carries out in the Semi-Arid Territory. Further to this, UNICEF implements an Integrated Education Programme (PEI), support a Network of Inclusion, Federal State Committees to Prevent Homicides of Adolescents in Ceará and Bahia states, and others.

Under the supervision of the Communication Specialist and in agreement with the Chief of the Semi-Arid Platform and the Chief of Communications and Partnerships in Brasilia, the Communications Intern will be responsible for supporting communication activities in SAB by engaging with local and regional media, supporting national Communication activities in SAB, developing content for UNICEF and UNICEF Seal digital platforms, engaging and collaborating with local partners.

The intern’s participation will include provision of support in technical areas and learning under the supervision of the Communication Specialist. The intern’s tasks are listed below according to the programme specifications:

  • Engage with local and regional media
  • Support national Communication activities in SAB
  • Support the development of content for the UNICEF Brazil and the UNICEF Seal digital platforms
  • Engage and collaborating with local partners

  • A monthly stipend of BRL 1,500 (6 months X 1,500 = BRL 9,000)
  • The intern will be allowed to join in official trips; costs will be covered by UNICEF.

The Communication Intern will work from the UNICEF Zonal Office in Salvador/BA, 20h per week (4h a day: from Monday through Friday).

Duration: 6 months

Qualifications:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • No immediate relatives working for any UNICEF
  • Be currently enrolled in a degree program or be a recent graduate (within past two years)
  • Strong academic performance or letter of recommendation
  • Proficiency in English, French or Spanish and language of the office is required for regular internships.
  • Knowledge of relevant computer systems and applications; excellent knowledge of MS Office is required.
  • Be enrolled in a graduate or undergraduate-level degree programme in Communications or other related fields, or have graduated within the previous year;
  • Knowledge about Human Rights, International Relations and Communication, Public Relations, Public Advocacy and related fields is desirable;
  • Have completed at least 3 years of an undergraduate-level degree programme at a university institution recognized by the Ministry of Education;
  • Ability to work in a multicultural environment;
  • Good interpersonal skills such as the ability to communicate clearly and effectively, team work and pro-activity; 
  • Demonstrate commitment with the United Nations values and principles.
