United Nations University Institute in Macau

United Nations University Institute in Macau is a research institute at the intersections of information and communication technology (ICT) and international development. The institute conducts policy-relevant research projects, focusing on key issues faced by societies as expressed in the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development through high-impact innovations and technologies. Through its research, the institute encourages data-based and evidence-driven actions and policy towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Cyber Resilience Project

Cyber resilience enhances the ability of individuals, communities, cities, and countries to achieve the desired level of functioning in the face of the inevitable disruptions of information and communication technology services and infrastructure due to adverse cyber events – which are caused by technical and system faults, advanced persistent threats, as well as natural phenomenon such as floods and typhoons. This project aims to enhance the cyber resilience of the civil society in Macau SAR through the development of an all-of-society cyber resilience management model; and the operationalisation of the model through tools and applications in partnership with civil society and governmental stakeholders.

Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Principal Investigator (PI) of the project, the Visiting Research Assistant (which is equivalent to an intern position), shall be entrusted with the following tasks:

  • undertake a review of literature and policies on cyber resilience
  • contribute to the development of a Cyber Resilience Management Model
  • work with the cyber resilience team to execute project activities
  • communicate research findings at relevant scientific meetings and through publications
  • reside full-time in Macau for the duration of the contract
  • perform other tasks in support of the project and the PI

Required qualifications and experience

Required qualifications and experience include:

  • a Bachelor’s degree at minimum in a technology or international development related field; holders of graduate degree (master’s degree or equivalent) will be an advantage
  • experience in cybersecurity would be an added advantage
  • experience with undertaking systematic literature and policy reviews
  • strong research communication skills, both presentation and writing skills
  • fluency in both oral and written English; knowledge of Cantonese is an advantage
  • a strong ability to work independently and within a team
  • strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a multicultural environment with sensitivity to diversity

This is a locally recruited post open for Macau residents (BIR holders) only. UNU Macau does not sponsor a working visa for this position.

Remuneration

A small stipend of MOP$4,500 per month will be provided to the selected candidate. UN income is not subject to taxes in Macau.

The contractor will be responsible for paying local taxes and other fiscal obligations. The institute accepts no responsibility for the medical and life insurance or costs arising from accidents and illness incurred during the contract period.

Duration of contract

The Visiting Research Assistant will be based in UNU in Macau on a full-time basis for five (5) months.

The purpose of this experience is not to lead to further employment with the institute but to complement a candidate’s studies. Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of the project.

The successful candidate will be employed under a consultant contract (CTC) and will not hold international civil servant status, nor is he/she a “staff member” as defined in the United Nations Staff Rules and Regulations.

Starting date

July 2020.
