UNICEF Malaysia is looking for internship candidate to support the program unit under Communication for Development (C4D) & Adolescent Development and Participation (ADAP).

BACKGROUND

UNICEF is the United Nations Children's Fund, which has more than 10,000 staff members working in 190 countries and territories around the world. Since 1954, UNICEF has been joining forces with the Government of Malaysia to improve the wellbeing of children. More information on what we do in Malaysia is available at https://www.unicef.org/malaysia/.

Engaging adolescents and youth have long been a part of UNICEF's mandate, as participation is a right and one of the guiding pillars of the Convention on the Rights of a Child (CRC). The engagement and participation of adolescents and youth is also an important strategy to deliver results across all areas of UNICEF's work. UNICEF's Strategic Plan 2018-2021 highlights "adolescent empowerment" as a key Result Area and "young people and children as change agents" as one of the Change Strategies.

In Malaysia, 5.5 million adolescents aged 10-17 make up the country's 32 million population. Whilst Malaysia has experienced rapid economic and social development over the last 20 years, a myriad of social, economic and health factors continue to undermine the ability of adolescents to reach their full potential. Adolescents and young people should have access to opportunities to develop skills for learning, personal empowerment, employability and active citizenship to enable them as change makers which can contribute to eliminating Malaysian society's greatest challenges.

UNICEF Malaysia's current Country Programme (2016-2020) has a dedicated output to strengthening the participation of adolescents in local development and child rights monitoring, with a strong focus on enhanced participation through digital, media and innovative communication tools.
