Eligibility criteria

Candidate age: between 18 and 29 throughout the entire duration of their assignment. Nationals of the country of assignment are not eligible, except the assignments in Headquarters duty stations.

Description of task

Under the direct supervision of the UNV Country Coordinator, the UN Youth Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

  • Support the UNV Programme in the promotion of volunteerism values in the country
    • Development of capacity-building opportunities on volunteerism through events and workshops, with the participation of civil society members, giving particular attention to the most vulnerable groups (youth, women, persons with disabilities, people from rural areas);
    • Promotion of volunteerism values and UNV programme in events and expos related to the Sustainable Development Goals and the Agenda 2030.
  • Contribution to the UNV Field Unit external communication strategy implementation
    • Direct contact with civil society organisations for the establishment of productive relationships with stakeholders;
    • Promotion of stories and best-practices of volunteerism in the country that foster equality;
    • Updating of contents in the social networks’ pages of the Field Unit.
  • Assistance to the UNV Field Unit networking and internal communication activity
    • Assist the UNV Country Coordinator throughout the volunteer management cycle, including interviews and managing volunteer files, etc.;
    • Maintain constant communication with the UN Volunteers’ group;
    • Identify new volunteerism opportunities for the UN Volunteers’ group;
    • Organise periodical meetings with the UN Volunteers deployed in the country;
    • Support new-coming UN Volunteers and promoting the 2P2 “Buddy programme”.
Qualifications/Requirements Required degree level: Bachelor degree or equivalent Education - Additional Comments:

Currently studying towards a degree in communications, journalism, social sciences, international development, events’ organisation, humanities, public/business administration or any other relevant field.

Required experience: 12 Months Experience remark:

Demonstrated interest and/or experience (up to 2 years) in communication, youth, journalism, international relationships building, events’ organization, inter-culture management, volunteering, business administration, humanities.

Previous experience as a volunteer and/or experience of another culture, (i.e. studies, volunteer work, internship) would be highly regarded.

Language skills:

Learning and development are a central part of the UN University Volunteer’s assignment and take place before, during and after his or her assignment in the field. Ideally, offering diverse opportunities for learning and development aims to strengthen the volunteer’s skills and competences, improve the quality of the assignment and keep the volunteer’s motivation high.

Learning elements for the UN University Volunteer include the development of:

Professional skills: including specific competencies and reflection on assignment-related abilities; and on-the-job skills such as time management, problem-solving, team-building; and career preparedness such as interview skills, CV preparation, job searching.

Inter-personal skills: including communication and listening skills; multi-cultural awareness and cultural competency; and conflict and stress management.

Volunteering-related skills: including leadership; civic responsibility; and engagement and active participation.

Beyond the learning opportunities provided by UNV, the host agency will support knowledge and capacity development in the technical areas that are relevant to the UN University Volunteer’s assignment. The host agency will provide, at its expense, UN University Volunteers with equal opportunity to participate in training courses and workshops offered to its personnel.
