.Purpose of the Position\: To provide support in the coordination of the Afghanistan and Pakistan GPEI Hub (Hub) activities.


Objectives of the Programme and of the immediate Strategic Objective\: Polio Eradication is a mission critical objective for WHO, as mandated by multiple WHA resolutions. The overall objective of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) is to interrupt the transmission of poliovirus worldwide, certify eradication, stop the use of oral poliovirus vaccine and successfully sunset the program. GPEI aims to do this through providing strong support to and collaboration with national governments, who lead these areas of work. In order to help realize these goals, GPEI is establishing a Hub to coordinate the inputs and support provided by the GPEI Partnership from regional and global levels to the country programs in Afghanistan and Pakistan with the goal of ensuring the full implementation of GPEI's 2019-2023 Strategy.

Organizational context\: Under the supervision of the Hub Coordinator, and the overall guidance of Director, Polio Eradication, the incumbent will support the management and operations of the GPEI Hub. The Hub is a GPEI structure embedded within the WHO EMRO Polio office in Amman and consisting of co-located GPEI partner staff. The Hub’s primary role is to help address challenges faced by the two endemic countries by facilitating and assisting strategic and operational planning and implementation across the epidemiologic block within the context of the concurrent GPEI and national goals of polio eradication. The Hub coordinates the support provided by the GPEI partners at the regional and global level and focuses on agreed upon Areas of Work led by the most relevant GPEI partner represented in the Hub.

Summary of Assigned Duties

The incumbent will perform the following duties\:

  1. Ensure the smooth operations of the Hub, including identifying and planning for the Hub’s administrative and operational needs together with the Hub Coordinator and WHO Regional team in the Eastern Mediterranean Region. Develop regular reports on Hub progress, synthesizing workplan, budget and qualitative information for the Hub Coordinator and other senior management.

  2. Support the Area of Work Leads in development and regular revision of Hub workplan templates, tools, tracking mechanisms, and in monitoring progress of the Hub workplan implementation.

  3. Support the Hub coordinator in developing briefing materials, presentations and other related material for WHO and other GPEI partners, in particular the Strategy Committee of the GPEI.

  4. Coordinate organization of regular meetings of the Hub team including video-/teleconferences and in-person meetings. Support organization of relevant wider GPEI meetings managed by the Hub. Manage the logistics of these meeting including agenda development, review and organization of background documentation, and coordination of presenters.

  5. Prepare summaries of meetings including minutes, action items or reports as required and develop and implement a system to track meeting action items and ensure their timely completion.

  6. Maintain centralized repository of relevant Hub, Afghanistan and Pakistan related material.

  7. Develop and maintain a system to ensure timely sharing of relevant information with Hub team members and beyond.

  8. Provide technical input to Hub related activities and workplans.

  9. Perform other specific related duties, as required and assigned by the supervisor.

    Education Qualifications

    Essential

    University degree in health sciences, public health, project management or related field.

    Experience

    Essential

    At least 5 years of combined relevant experience at the national and international level, in project management including collaborating with multiple stakeholders.

    Desirable

    Relevant experience in public health, immunization and/or polio eradication would be an asset.

    Use of Language Skills

    Languages

    Excellent knowledge of English. Knowledge of Arabic, and any of the main languages spoken in Pakistan and Afghanistan (Urdu, Pashto, or Dari) would be an asset.

    Other Skills (e.g. IT)

    Proficiency in MS Office.

    Excellent skills in managing document repositories e.g. SharePoint, Dropbox and calls/meetings through virtual platforms e.g. Teams, Zoom, Webex.
