The mission of the Green Climate Fund (“GCF”, “Fund”) is to assist developing countries to respond to climate change while bringing prosperity to their peoples.

Established in 2010, the GCF invests in transformational climate projects in the developing world. The Fund makes an ambitious contribution to global climate action and channels significant financial resources into developing countries to help build low-emission and climate-resilient societies.  It is country-driven and undertakes actions that reflect the circumstances of each country concerned and its national aspirations. The GCF is a key enabler of the 2015 Paris Agreement on Climate Change.

Position Objective

The Climate Science Lead, reporting to the Executive Director, leads integration of the latest climate science, modelling and climate impact assessment methods into the processes and operations of the GCF Secretariat. This involves coordinating an internal network of experts to assure and strengthen the climate impact of GCF investment programming, strategic planning and policies. It also involves leading wide collaboration across the GCF Secretariat to mainstream knowledge of climate science, impact assessment methods and the latest global developments in climate norms and practice.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

Purpose

  • Integrate the latest climate science, modelling and climate impact assessment methods into GCF investment programming, strategic planning and policy-making processes, to ensure these are high quality and robust from a climate perspective;
  • Provide authoritative advice and thought leadership to innovate practices for climate assessment that are adapted for GCF and to mainstream climate knowledge widely across the GCF Secretariat;

 

Engagement

  • Coordinate an internal network of experts to carry out climate impact assessments and nurture wider collaboration across the Secretariat to strengthen the staff skill-base in climate science and assessments;
  • Engage with global and peer institutions to exchange knowledge on climate science and assessment and support Fund knowledge management, to ensure GCF is informed by and influences the latest global developments;
     

Delivery

  • Manage delivery of climate science/impact assessments, methodological guidance, climate scenario analysis, impact modelling and other products as required to inform the regular project review cycle and periodic strategic planning cycles;
  • Design training and organize knowledge resources to promote consistent staff onboarding in climate science and assessment methods and capture lessons to share with wider GCF stakeholders.
     

 

Required Experience and Qualifications*

  • Master's degree or higher in a climate science field;
  • Minimum 13 years of experience, including experience in developing and/or applying climate modelling and applying climate science and assessment methods to an investment or policy context;
  • Strong understanding of the IPCC and climate finance;
  • Work experience in developing countries;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are essential for this position; knowledge of another UN language an advantage.
