Financial Literacy Intern

Under the supervision and direction of the Financial Coach, the Financial Literacy Intern will assist in the implementation of a multi-faceted program to expose newly arrived refugees and immigrants to basic financial literacy skills and develop economic self-sufficiency. The financial capability program at the IRC includes comprehensive in-house financial education classes, personalized financial coaching, free tax preparation, and micro-financing loans for clients seeking to improve their financial capability skills.  

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with intake data entry of new financial literacy clients into Salesforce. Data will include client demographics, initial financial data, and the nature of financial concerns.
  • Assist in scheduling client intakes and follow-up appointments.
  • Support development of financial education classroom curriculum and activities on budgeting, banking, credit building, car buying, savings, predatory lending, taxes, and asset-building strategies.
  • Assist in the implementation and facilitation of classroom activities. Ensure classroom materials are printed and organized before each session.
  • Organize logistics and outreach materials for financial education classes, workshops and other special events for clients. Provide transportation for clients as needed.
  • Provide one-on-one support to assist clients with completing financial aid/low-income discount applications, opening a bank account, completing an IRC loan application, and setting-up mobile banking.
  • Research state legislation on consumer protections/rights as well as debt relief. 
  • Research free or low-cost community resources available for clients who need assistance with meeting basic household needs.
