NDMV AmeriCorps Resettlement Health Associate
BACKGROUND: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is at work in over 40 countries and 25 U.S. cities helping people to survive, reclaim control of their future and strengthen their communities. The IRC’s locally-funded office in Atlanta opened in 1979 and creates opportunities for refugees and immigrants to integrate and thrive in Georgia communities. The Atlanta office resettles over 500 refugees each year and serves an additional 3,400 refugees, immigrants and asylees in the state of Georgia with a diverse offering of programs that ensure families are empowered to rebuild their lives in communities throughout the state. Since our opening in 1979, the IRC in Atlanta has welcomed more than 27,000 refugees from 67 different countries to rebuild their lives in Georgia communities.
SCOPE: The IRC in Atlanta’s Resettlement program provides access to quality, client-centered, comprehensive health care services to refugees and immigrants in the metro Atlanta area through local primary care providers. IRC Atlanta is expected to serve more than 2,000 refugee and immigrant clients per year. Co-location with IRC is impacting the opportunity for the organizations, along with local community agencies, to collaborate to provide wrap around physical and behavioral health, and social services for our clients. This position will focus on working closely with clients and direct staff of both organizations to arrange for and coordinate a variety of client health care services, including specialist appointments. This is a 37.5 hour per week position.
PLEASE NOTE: This position is a Notre Dame Mission Volunteer (NDMV) AmeriCorps position. AmeriCorps oversight will be conducted through NDMV of Atlanta, and the IRC will serve as a site placement. •Introduce IRC in Atlanta and health related services to newly arrived clients during Cultural Orientation.
•Teach clients how to schedule health care appointments, access local providers; and how to effectively participate in health care appointments with providers; and how to schedule medicated transportation services.
•Transport clients to and from doctor appointment if needed.
•Submit a case aide request for transportation and interpretation services.
•Work with IRC staff to identify newly arrived clients for primary health care appointments and needed specialty care.
•Develop and implement tracking system for client primary care and specialist appointments.
•Coordinate and ensure access to transportation and interpretation for health care appointments.
•Conduct client interviews to assess satisfaction with health care services received.
•Coordinate with local health care providers to ensure clients have access to culturally appropriate, coordinated services.
•Design and implement relevant and culturally appropriate health education materials.
•Maintain open and effective communication with other IRC programs as appropriate.
•Actively participate in regularly scheduled staff meetings.
