NDMV AmeriCorps Financial Empowerment Associate

BACKGROUND: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is at work in over 40 countries and 25 U.S. cities helping people to survive, reclaim control of their future and strengthen their communities. The IRC’s locally-funded office in Atlanta opened in 1979 and creates opportunities for refugees and immigrants to integrate and thrive in Georgia communities. The Atlanta office resettles over 500 refugees each year and serves an additional 3,400 refugees, immigrants and asylees in the state of Georgia with a diverse offering of programs that ensure families are empowered to rebuild their lives in communities throughout the state. Since our opening in 1979, the IRC in Atlanta has welcomed more than 27,000 refugees from 67 different countries to rebuild their lives in Georgia communities.

SCOPE OF WORK: The AmeriCorps Financial Empowerment Associate is a one-year position responsible for providing financial education, counseling, and employment preparation services to assist new and recently arrived refugee clients to gain the financial knowledge needed to achieve and maintain economic self-sufficiency. The Financial Empowerment Associate will work closely with the IRC’s Financial Coach, a position focused on providing long-term and individualized financial coaching to clients. The Financial Empowerment Associate will complement this service delivery by focusing primarily on group financial workshop instruction as well as support the one-on-one services as needed. This position reports to the Manager of Economic Empowerment.

PLEASE NOTE: This position is a Notre Dame Mission Volunteer (NDMV) AmeriCorps position. AmeriCorps oversight will be conducted through NDMV of Atlanta, and the IRC will serve as a site placement. RESPONSIBILITIES:

Financial Education Services:

Work one-on-one with clients to complete a detailed, individualized financial assessment

Work with clients to develop household budgets and provide strategies for effective budget management

Support the IRC’s Financial Coach by providing one-on-one financial counseling to clients, individualized and tailored based on client’s needs

Deliver group classes and workshops on financial literacy topics such as banking, budgeting, credit building, managing debt, and taxes

Tailor workshop materials and curriculum as needed to meet the needs of clients

Connect clients to economic empowerment and other services offered by the IRC, such as employment placement, career development, microenterprise services, and case management

Connect clients to the IRC’s Financial Coach for long-term coaching services as needed

Identify and develop relationships with local financial institutions and community organizations that can provide products and services that meet clients’ needs

Provide support to the IRC’s microlending program as needed, including assisting with administering credit-building loans, vocational education loans, and auto loans.

Outcome Tracking and Service Documentation:

Maintain files and database records to track client progress through all economic empowerment services. Ensure timely and accurate compliance with all reporting requirements.
