Description

End-to-end Earth Observation Systems Engineer in the Φ-Lab Invest Office, Phi-Lab Division, Future Systems Department, Directorate of Earth Observation Programmes. 

Duties

You will report to the Head of the Φ-Lab Invest Office in the Φ-Lab.

Working in an open, collaborative, multi-disciplinary team (Φ-Lab), in active cooperation with other staff of the Directorate and ESA, as well as in cooperation with industry and research communities in the framework of ESA programmes, your duties will be:

  • preparing and overseeing competitive exploratory activities, executed by industry and research organisations of ESA Member States, in particular for the ‘Investing in Industrial Innovation’ (InCubed) programme, as well as related programmes;
  • stimulating and supporting the development of ‘NewSpace’ solutions and systems for Earth observation (EO);
  • supporting activities for enhancing the understanding of EO end-to-end system architectures and ecosystems, including:
  • Space segment, including ‘NewSpace’ architectures, onboard sensing and processing capabilities, data flow approaches
  • Ground segment aspects, such as data analytics, data distribution methodologies and data access 
  • User segment aspects, such as trends in EO applications and services, and in downstream industry
  • supporting activities for enhancing the understanding of the EO domain in a commercial context, including enablers and future trends;
  • prospecting for and evaluating emerging technologies, methodologies and techniques relevant for space/ground/user segments of ‘NewSpace’ EO systems; 
  • developing and supporting technology application demonstrations in the Φ-Lab collaborative environment;
  • facilitating high-risk/high-potential developments based on co-funding and other financial risk- mitigation arrangements;
  • liaising with counterparts in other ESA Directorates, notably D/IPL, D/TEC and the ESA Applications Area (D/NAV, D/TIA), to maximise the overall coherence of ESA activities and promote and position InCubed within the space sector.
     
Technical competencies
Background in space engineering with systems orientation and end-to-end view of Earth Observation missions
"NewSpace" technologies, methods and markets
Knowledge of commercial aspects within EO context
Experience with co-funded activities
Knowledge of both on-ground as onboard sub-systems (e.g. sensors, onboard data handling, data acquisition, mission planning, data processing)

Education

A Master’s degree or equivalent in relevant disciplines, e.g. engineering, computer science, applied physics is required.

The working languages of the Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these is required. Knowledge of another Member State language would be an asset.
