BACKGROUND

The purpose of this consultancy is to provide graphic design support to four teams in UNICEF headquarters for upcoming products including case studies, meeting materials, presentations, reports, and other interactive PDF and print/web-ready publications in line with UNICEF branding guidelines.

 Terms of Reference / Deliverables

The consultant will work with four different teams across UNICEF’s New York headquarters to deliver a wide range of print-ready products. Some of these products are already planned in terms of scope and length; others will be developed over the course of the consultancy and the selected consultant will work with the relevant team to agree on the appropriate level of effort needed. In total, this consultancy is expected to include 108 days of work over the duration of the contract.

In collaboration with the GenU Secretariat, the consultant will design materials for meetings of the GenU Board, Executive Committee and Leaders. As part of this work, the consultant will:

  • Design innovative and creative graphics, tables and charts to depict ideas and concepts;
  • Revise products based on at least three rounds of feedback; and
  • Deliver final designed products in interactive PDF and print/web-ready formats.

In collaboration with the Data Use team, the consultant will provide time estimates for and, once agreed, graphically design a variety of products, including

  • Guidance for country offices including on data landscaping, administrative data and data in humanitarian contexts
  • Policy briefs and reports for both internal and external use including case studies on recent COVID 19 related data work
  • Presentations for both internal and external use including for donors
  • Creation of static graphics for regular use and reuse by the team

In collaboration with the Demography team in the Data & Analytics Section, the consultant will produce:

  • Gender and Migration report design
  • Inputs for Demographics country profile
  • Charts for websites
  • Other dissemination materials
  • Presentations

In collaboration with the Education team in the Data & Analytics Section, the consultant will produce:

  • Factsheets: Madagascar, Montenegro, Togo (30 pages each)
  • Charts for blogs (10-15 charts)
  • A regional report on inclusive education (~100 pages)
  • Other requests

 Qualifications

  • A university degree (Bachelor's or higher) and 5-7 years of professional experience in a relevant field – i.e. graphic design, interaction design, visual communication, media design, system design or others. 
  • Strong graphic design skills particularly in layout, presentations, branding and visualization of systems and complex information and structures. Strong knowledge of design platforms like Adobe Creative Suite, design techniques, software, data visualization.
  • Knowledge of UNICEF Branding Style Book and previous experience working on data-heavy publications with UNICEF or other UN agencies are strongly preferred.
  • Proven capability of working on a project from the concept to the final design package.
  • An ability to communicate complex, abstract concepts using both visual, verbal and written language.
  • Ability to work with a diverse team and multiple project leads in a rapidly-changing work environment.
  • At least 5-7 years of professional experience in developing branding and layout.
  • English language fluency is required and ability to work with documents in other UN languages is highly valued. Please indicate any additional language qualifications in your application materials.

  • Financial proposal that will include:
  • your daily (in US$) to undertake the terms of reference (can be downloaded here: https://www.unicef.org/about/employ/index_consultancy_assignments.html . The assignment is for 108 total days of work, with some change in deliverables expected over the course of the consultancy and timelines for each product to be agreed in advance as each project is initiated.
  • Your dates of availability for the assignment
  • Any emergent / unforeseen duty travel and related expenses will be covered by UNICEF.
  • At the time the contract is awarded, the selected candidate must have in place current health insurance coverage.
  • Payment of professional fees will be based on submission of agreed satisfactory deliverables. UNICEF reserves the right to withhold payment in case the deliverables submitted are not up to the required standard or in case of delays in submitting the deliverables on the part of the consultant.

US. Visa information:

With the exception of the US Citizens, G4 Visa and Green Card holders, should the selected candidate and his/her household members reside in the United States under a different visa, the consultant and his/her household members are required to change their visa status to G4, and the consultant’s household members (spouse) will require an Employment Authorization Card (EAD) to be able to work, even if he/she was authorized to work under the visa held prior to switching to G4.
