Global Pulse is a flagship innovation initiative of the United Nations Secretary-General on big data. Its vision is a future in which big data and AI are harnessed and used responsibly as a public good. Its mission is to accelerate discovery, development and scaled adoption of data innovation for sustainable development and humanitarian action. To this end, Global Pulse will work to promote awareness of the opportunities Big Data presents for sustainable development and humanitarian action, forge public-private data sharing partnerships, generate high-impact analytical tools and approaches through its network of Pulse Labs, and drive broad adoption of useful innovations across the UN System.

Global Pulse implements data innovation programs through its Pulse Labs to provide UN and development partners with access to the data, tools and expertise required to discover new uses of big data and AI for development. Global Pulse develops policies, toolkits, applications and platforms to improve data-driven decision-making and support the evaluation of promising solutions.

The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary team and benefit from rich interactions with experts in different fields, including international development, humanitarian aid, data science, data visualisation, technology and communications. The internship will provide an excellent opportunity to learn about the applications of new data sources and artificial intelligence technology to support the SDGs Agenda 2030, as well as to understand communications inside large international organizations like the UN system.

This is a position in UNOPS for supporting projects carried out for UN Global Pulse. The incumbent of this position will be a personnel of UNOPS under its full responsibility.

Functional Responsibilities

The intern will work closely with the technical team and communications team to contribute to producing communications materials on various data analytics projects.

The intern(s) will execute the following duties:

  • Assist with condensing AI and data science research findings into accessible multimedia outputs including graphics, video and data visualizations;
  • Assist in the design and implementation of information visualizations about data and policy;
  • Provide support in research and analysis of big data sources and social media;
  • Assist with reviewing, vetting and testing tools for real time data analytics.

Education: 

  • Applicants must be currently enrolled in a university programme such as Bachelor, Masters or Ph.D. (or the equivalent) or have graduated from such studies within three (3) years prior to the applications date of the internship.
  • Candidates enrolled in a degree programme in Data Visualization, Visual Analytics, Information Science, Computer Science, Interaction Design, Information Design, Engineering, Data Journalism or a related subject is highly desirable 

Experience

  • Knowledge of Interactive data visualization development and information design is an asset;
  • Knowledge of research design and investigation methods is an asset;
  • Knowledge of data science, data analysis, and/or data visualization is an asset;
  • Knowledge of SQL, Tableau, Python, CSS, JavaScript and/or R languages is an asset;
  • Demonstrated experience and interest in visual storytelling, new technologies, data visualization, or ‘data journalism’ is an asset;
  • Excellent and effective skills, with experience in developing multimedia communications content and products for different audiences are an asset;
  • Experience in using the Adobe Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator) and in video editing are an asset;
  • Knowledge and strong interest in data, technologies and communications for international development are highly desired;
  • Multidisciplinary experience in projects that integrate ICTs and social sciences is an asset.

Language

  • Intermediate knowledge in English (written and oral) is required

This internship is not designed to lead to a staff position with UNOPS. Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of the internship.

Interns may be eligible for a monthly stipend  from UNOPS provided that they do not receive funds from other institutions. Further, UNOPS may provide a one time travel lumpsum of 500 USD. However, they must make their own arrangements for accommodation, travel and necessary visa arrangements.
