Detector Cooling Technician (EP-DT-FS-2020-105-LD)

Geneva

  • Organization: CERN - European Organization for Nuclear Research
  • Location: Geneva
  • Grade: Mid level - Grade 3 - Technical or Administrative roles - Only open to Nationals of all CERN Member States and Associate Member States
  • Occupational Groups:
    • Technology, Electronics and Mechanics

Company Description

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

Job Description

Are you an experienced technician specialised in construction, operation and maintenance of non-industrial cooling systems? Would you like to contribute your skills and experience to the construction, commissioning, operation and maintenance of complex large-scale CO2 cooling systems for particle physics detectors? Join CERN's Detector Technology Cooling team! Take part!

Introduction

As detector cooling technician, you will join:

  • The Experimental Physics (EP) Department, which carries out research in the field of experimental particle physics supporting several experiments at the large hadron collider (LHC) at CERN.
  • The Detector Technologies (DT) Group participates in the development, construction and operation of particle detectors for experiments at CERN. This comprises detector consolidation and upgrade projects as well as infrastructure for experiments.
  • The Fluidic System Section is charged to design, prototype, construct, commission, operate and maintain fluidic systems (gas & cooling) for detectors in CERN experiments. It has also mandate to perform selective R&D in areas relevant to novel detector thermal management, gas systems, and for the upgrade of the existing systems in view of higher detector performances and sustainable operation.

Functions

As a mechanical technician in the Fluidic System section you will participate in the construction, commissioning, operation and maintenance of CO2 cooling systems for the LHC experiments. In particular, you will:

  • During the design phase: participate in the cooling system design by taking a leading role in the qualification of components and the construction of the appropriate test benches.
  • During the systems construction: coordinate the workshop activities and organise the flow of components during the production and qualification; take a leading role in the organisation of the experimental area activities: preparation of assembly sites, coordination and organization of the logistics.
  • In the commissioning phase: take part in all the experimental site activities: connection of the CO2 plants to the on-site infrastructure, pressure and leak qualification, performance evaluation.
  • In preparation and during the operation period: take part in the section stand-by duty service; act as responsible for the organization of the spare parts and the maintenance activities, coordinate the teams of each experiment.

Qualifications

Technical certificate or general secondary education in the field of mechanics, industrial maintenance or a related field.

Experience:

  • Proven experience in operation and maintenance of cooling systems (CO2 cooling would be an asset).
  • Extensive experience in mechanical assembly of fluidic systems: reading of mechanical drawings, part preparation, leak tightness tests, joining technologies.
  • Demonstrated experience in mounting and cabling of electrical distribution systems.
  • Experience in supervision of mechanical workshop activities.
  • Initial experience with asset management (INFOR-EAM would be an asset).

Technical competencies:

  • Knowledge and use of standard vacuum components and piping
  • Knowledge and application of leak detection techniques and equipment
  • Assembly of mechanical structures and equipment
  • Integration of mechanical systems
  • Construction, operation and maintenance of detector cooling systems: CO2 cooling systems.

Behavioural competencies:

  • Working in teams: working well in groups and readily fitting into a team; participating fully and taking an active role in team activities.
  • Learning and sharing knowledge: taking steps to expand knowledge in other areas of expertise beyond own field.
  • Demonstrating flexibility: actively participating in the implementation of new processes and technologies.
  • Achieving results: delivering prompt and efficient service taking into account customer needs.
  • Managing self: working well autonomously; taking on activities and tasks without prompting.

Language skills:

  • English and French: ability to speak and read both languages in professional contexts.
  • Ability to draw up technical texts in one of the two languages.
