Post Context:
 
Under the guidance and direct supervision of the Team Leader- Policy & Engagement , the Communications & Engagement Analyst leads the implementation of the UNDP global communications strategy, as well as in the design, management and implementation of the Country Office communications and publication strategies which are geared to influence the development agenda, promote public and media outreach and mobilize political and financial support for UNDP.  In doing so, the incumbent facilitates internal communication towards the inclusion of innovative practices and resources into UNDP’s programmes, projects, services, and partnership engagement approaches while leveraging communications channels with external stakeholders. 
The Communications & Engagement Analyst, working closely with all teams and Senior Management is the daily face of UNDP to the outside world.  Through casting both a broad information net as well as targeted communication efforts, the Communications & Engagement Analyst projects the work and identity of UNDP outward and the perspectives and needs of the client communities in ward and will be the primary focal points for brand management, media engagement and communications.  
The Communications & Engagement Analyst, through keen awareness of communication actors and issues in Sri Lanka, positions and prepares UNDP colleagues for successful communication engagements with the press, government, formal presentations with institutional actors and non-traditional settings as well.  The Communication and Engagement Analyst prepares the field for the optimal visibility of UNDP’s substantive and innovative collaboration efforts in achieving Sri Lanka’s grand challenge.
 

Duties and Responsibilities

Ideas & Expertise:
  • Facilitate the inclusion of innovation practices and resources into UNDP’s programmes, projects, services, and partnership engagement approaches
  • Facilitate the contribution of Sri Lankan citizens and institutions in development innovations via CO and corporate UNDP innovation resources and access points
  • Collaboration with programme portfolio teams, projects, policy advisory and engagement team to co-develop innovative approaches 
  • Leveraging contemporary communication channels and platforms, reaches all relevant audiences including stakeholders, experts, sponsors and institutions and citizens with effective and continuous messaging that expands UNDPs position and engagement around the SDGs and Sri Lanka’s development agenda.  
  • Develops, packages and produces tailored and relevant communication materials and products.
  • Create media and information campaigns in local and regional media that position UNDP, as well as UNDP’s partners, and ensure the role and voices of UNDP and its collaborating partners are widely seen and heard in the national development dialogue. 
  • Capitalize on UNDP communication, outreach, and convening capability to provide a communications platform for citizen actors in development, with emphasis on Sri Lankan youth and business community.
 
Partnership engagement:
  • Creates a network of critical communication actors, partners and platforms essential for advancing development cooperation, innovation, and collaboration in Sri Lanka.
  • Systemically supports the integration of innovation approaches and external public engagement in UNDP’s programming and project development.
  • Seeks client feedback on communication products and efforts
  • Learn how clients and collaborators consume communication products and services, identifying information and data to facilitate greater reach, clarity and impact.
  • Identifies effective partner communication strategies and seeks to align and join efforts when useful to advancing UNDP’s shared agenda with its collaborative partners.
  • Provide basic and useful explanations to clients on communications requirements.   
  • Promotes use and citizen voices and institutional consumers to “tell the story” of development in Sri Lanka in appropriate media and fora.
 
Team Collaboration:
  • Proactively propose avenues for external engagement in UNDP’s work, utilizing the richness of ideas and energy to co-create within Sri Lankan communities and youth.
  • Support UNDP knowledge and advisory teams in integrating innovation approaches in the design of projects and collaborative initiatives. 
  • Briefs portfolio teams on messaging effectiveness, identifying successes and impediments.
  • Lead internal workshops and training on social media usage that promote UNDP and avoid negative outcomes.    
  • Leads the crafting of, together with programme and policy teams, consumable messages and implement interventions for targeted audiences that expand and secure UNDPs reach.

Required Skills and Experience

Education
  • Advanced (Master's) or Bachelor’s Degree in media relations, journalism, publishing, or a related field. 
 
Experience
  • Master’s Degree with 0 years or bachelor’s with 2 years of relevant experience at the national or international level in public relations, communications or advocacy.
  • Experience in the usage of computers and office software packages, good knowledge and experience in handling of web-based management systems.
  • Previous UN experience would be an added advantage 
  • Experience in brand management and journalism is desirable. 
 
Language Requirements
  • Fluency in English. Fluency in other national languages will be an added advantage.
