The Communication Section, UNICEF East Asia and Pacific Regional Office is seeking applications to a roster for individual consultants to document and take photographs of UNICEF’s programme activities.

UNICEF works to ensure the rights of all children in the East Asia and Pacific Region.  This means the rights of every child living in this country, irrespective of their nationality, gender, religion or ethnicity, to:

  • survival – to basic healthcare, peace and security;
  • development – to a good education, a loving home and adequate nutrition;
  • protection – from abuse, neglect, trafficking, child labour and other forms of exploitation; and
  • participation – to express opinions, be listened to and take part in making any decisions that affect them

 

How can you make a difference?

The Communication Section, UNICEF East Asia and Pacific Regional Office is seeking applications to a roster for individual consultants to document and take photographs of UNICEF’s programme activities.

 

Work Assignment:

  • Capture high-resolution photographs documenting UNICEF and partner programmes activities.
  • Write concise, well edited captions for all images.  Captions should be embedded in the images and shared separately as a word document as well. These captions should have specific details such as the location taken, name and age of the person(s), activity, and any other relevant information.

The consultant should:

  • Keep in mind culture, gender and other diverse sensitivities as per UNICEF guidelines. The photographs should be usable for diverse audiences and have universal appeal.
  • Ensure effective and efficient provision of services, full confidentiality in all aspects of the assignment, management of information flow and follow-up on deadlines and commitments made.
  • Ensure dignity of subjects, particularly in the context of children and vulnerable groups, including people living with or affected by HIV.
  • Ensure consent forms are signed by children and/or guardians as per UNICEF guidelines.
  • Conduct all work independently, in accordance with professional standards. This includes working from their own office and using their own hardware and software equipment.

 

End Product:

  • Provide edited photos in RAW and/or JPEG format as per the minimum specified per shoot. The size of the image should be usable for both print (large to small formats) and digital platforms.
  • Images should be embedded with captions; photo credit.
  • Captions should also be submitted in a Word document.
  • Photos required urgently should be shared electronically with UNICEF.
  • All photos taken during a shoot should be delivered to UNICEF within one week of the shoot ending or as per agreement.
  • Consent forms signed by subjects, and guardians in the case of children as per UNICEF guidelines. Related forms will be prepared and provided by UNICEF.

 

Official travel:  Travel may be required during the assignment.

 

Estimated Duration of Contract:  11.5 months with possibility of extension.  The number of actual working days will be determined on a need basis.

 

Qualifications or Specialized Knowledge/Experience Required:

  • Degree in communications, arts, media, visual art, photojournalism, or any relevant field and/or internationally recognized certificates in photography.
  • Minimum five years of progressive (preferably international) experience as a photographer.
  • Experience taking photographs for large, high profile media agencies, international organizations, development projects.
  • Available and willingness to travel across the region.
  • Previous work experience and knowledge of development landscape in East Asia & Pacific will be an asset.
  • Previous work experience with UNICEF and familiarity with UNICEF’s new branding strategy and guidelines is an asset.
  • Good interpersonal skills and flexible attitude.
  • Organizational and coordination skills.
  • Ability to work independently and to meet tight deadlines to deliver products on time.
  • Demonstrate a client-oriented approach, tact and ability to work with people of different cultural backgrounds.
  • Fluency in English required.
  • Professional work ethic, integrity, and initiative.

Individuals engaged under a consultancy or individual contract will not be considered “staff members” under the Staff Regulations and Rules of the United Nations and UNICEF’s policies and procedures, and will not be entitled to benefits provided therein (such as leave entitlements and medical insurance coverage). Their conditions of service will be governed by their contract and the General Conditions of Contracts for the Services of Consultants and Individual Contractors. Consultants and individual contractors are responsible for determining their tax liabilities and for the payment of any taxes and/or duties, in accordance with local or other applicable laws.
