Organizational Setting

The Markets and Trade Division (EST) focuses on global issues that affect agricultural trade and markets, including policy analysis of trade measures and agreements, and their implications for food security and development. The Division is responsible for the publication of the FAO flagship report The State of Agricultural Commodity Markets (SOCO) and houses the Global Information and Early Warning System, and the Secretariats of the FAO Committee on Commodity Problems (CCP), nine Intergovernmental Commodity Groups (IGGs) and the Agricultural Market Information System (AMIS).

The post is located in FAO Headquarters in Rome, in the Commodity Markets and Development (CMD) Team, Markets and Trade Division. The Team undertakes research on the linkages of trade and development, leads the technical engagement of FAO in the work of plurilateral intergovernmental forums such as the G20 and the G7, and is responsible for the preparation of The State of Agricultural Commodity Markets flagship report.

Reporting Lines

The Consultant reports to the Team Leader, Commodity Markets and Development Team, under the overall guidance of the Division Director.

Technical Focus

The Consultant will conduct research and analysis on emerging issues, their impacts on global and domestic agricultural markets and the related implications on food security and nutrition and development. Drawing from this analyses and broader FAO knowledge, the Consultant will contribute to policy reports (including The State of Agricultural Commodity Markets flagship report) that aim at facilitating the understanding of, and dialogue on the impacts of emerging issues and policy decisions by Members.

Tasks and responsibilities

The assigned tasks and responsibilities related to this area of work include the following:

  • Review empirical literature on the linkages between trade and sustainable development, including economic, social and environmental dimensions and contribute to the identification of emerging issues and relevant analytical frameworks.
  • Analyse data from multiple global datasets, such as FAOSTAT, World Development Indicators (WDI), and International Financial Statistics (IFS) to support and guide technical and policy work on markets, trade and development issues.
  • Contribute to thematic publications with the provision of substantive technical inputs, drafting papers/chapters, in particular for The State of Agricultural Commodity Markets (SOCO), as well as for policy reports requested by FAO Members.
  • Coordinate the organization and follow-up of technical meetings, consultations and conferences initiated by CMD, the development/production of required materials, and the provision of information and assistance to participants.
  • Support the team leader in liaising with other International Organizations and stakeholders, networks and platforms that can help advance global dialogue on various issues related to agricultural commodity markets, trade and development and participate in meetings as appropriate and when needed.
  • Perform other related duties.

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements

  • For PSA: University degree in economics, agricultural economics or a closely related field.
  • For Consultants: Advanced degree in economics, agricultural economics, environmental studies or related field.
  • At least 3 years of relevant experience in the sector of food and agriculture comprising, if possible, both technical research, writing of policy reports and support to multilateral processes.
  • Working knowledge of English, French or Spanish and limited knowledge of one of the other two or Arabic, Chinese, Russian.
