Organizational Setting

The Office of Communications (OCC) is responsible for all corporate and internal communication activities of the Organization. It ensures coherence and consistency in FAO's corporate messaging and communications' outputs, as well as enables cost-effectiveness in use of communication-related resources across the Organization.

Reporting Lines

The Communication Officer reports to the Senior Communication Officer (Head, Media Branch, OCCM)

Technical Focus

Media relations, corporate communications.

Key Results

Comprehensive communication and media relations expertise for the planning and delivery of OCC programmes, products and services and the development of related policies and specialized tools and systems

Key Functions

• Leads projects and/or work teams, leads on and/or participates in office teams, provides services and/or professional expertise on Organization-wide committees and working groups and represents FAO at interagency meetings;
• Plans and delivers programmes, products and services including related policies, systems and tools to facilitate the effective media relations and internal as well as external corporate communication;
• Analyses information, data, statistics, relativities, trends, problems, and/or issues to support effective communication delivery, new initiatives, and the preparation of plans, strategies, reports, policies and/or other products;
• Provides specialist advice and expertise to internal and external partners on specific or complex cases, strategic communication, written communication, policy interpretation issues and/or best practices;
• Manages special projects and provides guidance to consultants for the development and implementation of new products, tools and systems;
• Develops information, training materials and products to increase understanding of programmes, services and policies, promote capacity development;
• Develops relevant performance criteria and indicators to evaluate programmes, products and services.

Specific Functions
• Contributes to the development, implementation and impact analyses of the media strategies and campaigns of the Organization, including by working closely with OCC leadership and client divisions and offices in FAO;
• Plans and coordinates media outreach for upcoming events (Planning Editor); and oversees and coordinates daily output (News Editor);
• Supervises junior communication officers, ensuring clear assignment of work and responsibilities, and being accountable for the quality and timely delivery of work;
• Edits/drafts articles, statements, briefing notes, opinion pieces, talking points, key messages and other communications outputs for the Organization, ensuring consistency, accuracy and meeting the needs of target audiences;
• Establishes and maintains media relations, keeping the media informed of the activities of the Organization, responding to requests and queries:
• Maintains close, daily coordination with other branches in OCC and communications colleagues in Decentralized Offices to ensure a comprehensive, concerted corporate approach to media outreach;
• Oversees and maintains close, regular and timely coordination between the Branch and client offices to plan coverage and media outreach of upcoming events, ensuing media- and public-friendly messaging of FAO's substantive and technical work;
• Monitors and analyses policy materials and developments within FAO at headquartersand field levels and beyond (United Nations, intergovernmental, think-tank, corporate and NGO reports) to keep abreast of strategic developments and to ensure that they are consistently and accurately reflected in the communications output.

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements

• Advanced university degree in communication, journalism, social or political science or a related field
• Seven years of relevant experience incommunication, public information, journalism, international relations,
• Working knowledge of English and limited knowledge of another FAO official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish)

• Work experience in more than one location or area of work, particularly in field positions is desirable
• Extent and relevance of experience in the field of communications for prominent organizations, particularly at the international level
• Extent and relevance of experience in drafting/editing high-quality materials for a wide variety of audiences
• Demonstrated experience innews writing/editing in a deadline-driven environment
• Extent and relevance of experience in covering international and multilateral affairs, planning and coordinating complex news coverage as well as directing/editing others' work
• Extent and relevance of experience in multimedia production is considered a strong asset
• Understanding of FAO policies and programmes is a strong asset
