I.                Background

The CGIAR Research Program of Roots, Tubers and Bananas (RTB) has been focusing on gender and breeding as one of the key themes. The consultant will work with the interdisciplinary team of gender and breeding researchers to consolidate key findings and provide guidance to help develop generic templates for documenting trait preferences systematically. This will link to ongoing work by IITA, CIP, CIAT/Bioversity in cooperation with RTB’s Gender and Breeding Initiative (GBI) and the Excellence in Breeding platform. The aim is to improve the G+ tools and the existing customer and product profile templates that have been developed by GBI and EiB respectively. The ultimate goal is ensuring the tools/template are socially inclusive with a specific focus on gender and specific value chain actors’ preferences related to e.g. processing ability, food product quality, marketability and consumer preferences.

II.               Objective

To provide technical expertise for the gender and breeding activities especially on reviewing customer and product profile templates and Participatory Variety Selection (PVS) tools that provide an important feedback loop to inform breeding strategies. With regards to the templates it will be important to know how generic and how crop specific these have to be in order to effectively incorporate social inclusiveness and especially gender in a way that is directly understandable, relevant and workable for breeders and other stakeholders. The consultant is expected to work closely with and consult breeders to try and build some sense of ‘ownership’  for the templates.

III.             Deliverables

  1. Reviews and contributions to four manuscripts/reports as co-author or acknowledgement
  2. Reviews and contributions to G+ tools and consumer targeting tools
  3. A two-page summary of: the advantages of socially inclusive gender-responsive PVS including scalable approaches such as Tricot; how can these PVS approaches result in a cost effective feedback loop that will inform breeding on user needs and preferences to contribute to equitable and inclusive breeding; and how does this link to the ongoing gender and breeding work (G+ tool)
  4. Conceptual and technical input for developing generic templates.
