OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST

Background

The Living Heritage Entity of the UNESCO Culture Sector in collaboration with the International Information and Networking Centre for Intangible Cultural Heritage in the Asia-Pacific Region (ICHCAP), is developing the first Massive Open Online Course  (MOOC) on Living Heritage and Sustainable Development.  

 

The course content will focus on introducing the topic of safeguarding intangible cultural heritage - or 'living heritage' - and sustainable development to reflect on the relationship between both fields, drawing on the rich curriculum content that UNESCO has developed under the global capacity-building programme for safeguarding intangible cultural heritage. The main objective of the course is to strengthen knowledge and awareness on the interdependence of safeguarding intangible cultural heritage and sustainable development.

 

The development of this online course is a great opportunity to network with universities and reach out to university students and young people with an interest in heritage and development. It will also attract new audiences from the development field who wish to learn more about the connections between living heritage and sustainable development.

Long Description

The MOOC will be recorded in order to make it available online and will be open all year long to be taken at any time on free basis.

The course will be composed of six thematic modules, each consisting of four to five related chapters, proposed as follows:

  1. Introduction to intangible cultural heritage
  2. Communities and their intangible cultural heritage
  3. Safeguarding intangible cultural heritage
  4. Intangible cultural heritage and gender
  5. Intangible cultural heritage for sustainable livelihoods and inclusive social development
  6. Intangible cultural heritage for resilience, environmental sustainability and peacebuilding
Long Description

Regarding the modules 5 and 6 on living heritage and sustainable development the following themes will be covered.

 

  • Intangible cultural heritage and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development
  • Intangible cultural heritage and education
  • Intangible cultural heritage and health
  • Intangible cultural heritage and income generation
  • Intangible cultural heritage, food security and agriculture
  • Intangible cultural heritage, natural disasters and climate change
  • Intangible cultural heritage in conflict-related emergency situations
  • Intangible cultural heritage and preventing and solving disputes

 

In this context, UNESCO is launching this call for application in order to select up to 11 experts/consultants to develop the content and deliver in an online video format the thematic modules for the MOOC.

 

The thematic modules 1 to 4 will be developed and delivered by two selected instructors who will be tasked to draft two to three chapters by module and review two to three other chapters.

 

For the thematic module 5 and 6 the selected instructors will be tasked to only develop one chapter and review another specific chapter.

 

The selected experts will form a group of instructors for this course and they will be accompanied in their tasks by a lead faculty who will be responsible for ensuring the quality and overall academic coherence of the course that will be offered.

Expected duration

Work to be carried out between late October 2020 and February 2021.

The number of working days to develop and deliver one chapter is estimated at about 8 days. The specific number of working days per instructor will depend on the number of the thematic chapters that he/she will cover.

 

Work assignment

In the context of the implementation of the global capacity-building programme of the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (hereinafter “the Convention”), and with reference to the Sustainable Development Goals, the individual specialist shall develop the content and deliver in an online video format a(the) thematic chapter(s) of a Massive Open Online Course on Living Heritage and Sustainable Development. More specifically, the individual specialist shall:

  1. Get familiar with the relevant documents related to the MOOC on Living Heritage and Sustainable Development (to be provided by UNESCO);
  2. Provide feedback on the detailed course syllabus developed by the Lead Faculty, including reviewing and revising, as appropriate, the description and learning outcomes of the assigned chapter(s).
  3. Draft the script(s) of the assigned chapter(s) and provide feedback on the script(s) of the co-instructor. This involves writing the script(s) integrating feedback from the co-instructor, the lead faculty, UNESCO and an instructional design specialist, recommend graphics and visuals for the filming as well as reviewing and commenting on the script(s) prepared by the co-instructor (maximum 3 scripts per instructor).
  4. Prepare the exercises, a quiz and reference materials for the assigned chapters. To this end, review relevant existing resources (i.e. readings, journal articles, videos, websites, toolkits, etc.) and develop at least one self-learning exercise related to each of the assigned chapter(s), integrating feedback from the co-instructor, UNESCO and the instructional design specialist.
  5. Participate in the video-recording of the respective chapter(s), by assisting in a pre-filming test with a specialized filming company, recording the videos for the assigned chapters and providing post-production feedback on their edits (if required).

  • Scripts of the assigned chapter(s).
  • Exercises, quiz and reference materials for the assigned chapter(s) (at least one self-learning exercise and one quiz per chapter , one reference material, i.e. readings, videos, websites, or other relevant resource,).

Education

  • Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in a field relevant to the topic of the call (e.g. Heritage Studies, Anthropology, Social or Human Sciences, Statistics etc.)

 

Experience

  • At least 10 years of national and international work experience in the field of intangible cultural heritage. 
  • Experience in either teaching university courses and/or facilitating training workshops and/or programmes in the field of intangible cultural heritage. 
  • Experience and expertise in the thematic area(s) of the chapter(s)/module(s) the candidate would like to work on (see list above).
  • Experience in conducting project work, research and/or teaching/training activities in the chosen area. 

Skills and Competencies

  • Very good knowledge of the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.
  • Knowledge on linkages between the safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage and one or more areas of sustainable development (environment, emergencies, migration, education, …).
  • Familiarity with online teaching environments either as a participant or a facilitator, teacher or moderator.
  • Ability to work as a team.

 

Languages

  • Good communication and writing skills in English.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Experience

  • Work experience in safeguarding intangible cultural heritage and its relationship with sustainable development.
  • Participation in UNESCO trainings for facilitators and conducting training activities under the global capacity-building programme for the implementation of the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.

 

Languages

 

  • Knowledge of another official language (Arabic, French, Chinese, Russian, Spanish) of UNESCO.
