Senior Economist

 

The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) was created to help foster social and economic development, create wealth, and improve infrastructure connectivity in Asia by investing in sustainable infrastructure and other productive sectors. As a new addition to the global multilateral development bank (MDB) family, AIIB works closely with other multilateral and bilateral institutions as well as the private sector to improve infrastructure by promoting regional cooperation and partnerships. AIIB has 103 members, including 21 prospective members, and has an authorized capital of USD100 billion, of which USD20 billion is paid in. AIIB is a triple-A-rated institution.

 

The AIIB appointed its first Chief Economist and is in the process of building a state-of-the-art Economics Department to support the operations of the Bank and contribute to the public good of new thinking within the community of multilateral development finance institutions. In particular, we want to help the Bank achieve the objectives of its recently adopted corporate strategy under Green Infrastructure, Connectivity and Regional Cooperation, Technology-enabled Infrastructure, and Private Capital Mobilization. The candidate should display all-round capabilities in economic analysis, including macroeconomic analysis, project cost-benefit analysis (CBA), impact assessment and relevant quantitative skills.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct in-depth analysis on issues pertaining to infrastructure and financing, including country or sector infrastructure diagnostics and impact assessments.
  • Conduct in-depth cost-benefit analysis of infrastructure projects, or critically reviewing CBA of third parties, in support of AIIB’s financing decisions.
  • Contribute research work and support preparation of the department’s publications.
  • Build up the suite of analytical capacity in the Bank together with internal and external stakeholders, to support the work of AIIB.
  • Support senior management in conducting policy dialogue with stakeholders.
  • Provide guidance to the work, and support the growth, of junior economists.
  • Perform any other assignments as required by senior management.

 

Requirements:

  • Minimum 8-10 years of relevant professional experience in international financial institutions or comparable organizations;
  • Substantial experience of analysis in a key sector such as energy, transport or ICT would be considered favorably;
  • Experience with statistical and/or geospatial software will be welcomed;
  • Thorough understanding of East Asian economies will be an advantage;
  • Proven track record in achieving results efficiently and developing innovative solutions;
  • Experience on collaborating across organizational boundaries and/or leading teams;
  • Outstanding written and verbal English communication skills;
  • Masters’ degree in Economics, Finance, Public Policy, Business, and/or related fields from a reputable university is essential. A doctoral degree is preferred; and
  • Candidates are encouraged to submit their written analytical work together with the application.
