SCOPE OF WORK:

The IRC Phoenix New Roots Program’s focus is to help newly-arrived refugees, asylees and other immigrant populations access fresh, affordable and healthy produce, better integrate into their communities, and navigate their new food systems. The New Roots Food & Health Intern will help IRC staff in outreach, recruitment and facilitation of the Navigating a New Food System program as well as operation of the New Roots Farm Stand at CamelBackyard. This position works directly with the New Roots Local Food Coordinator.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

·Assist New Roots staff in managing the bi-weekly New Roots Farm Stand at CamelBackyard;

·Coordinate with New Roots growers to aggregate produce for the farm stand;

·Conduct outreach and provide nutrition education resources to the community;

·Recruit and enroll refugee women in Navigating a New Food System program;

·Facilitate interactive training modules for Navigating a New Food System Program;

·Administer client surveys;

·Support community engagement and educational activities;

·Assist the New Roots Local Food Coordinator with ongoing program tasks as needed.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: An Intern will learn the following skills:

·Develop organizational skills

·Build communication skills while engaging customers and community members

·Learn about nutrition programming throughout the valley

·Develop a working knowledge of how to assist refugee women in learning about the American food system

·Implement logistical planning and time management skills in a dynamic environment

·Design curriculum to expand client mastery of the “Navigating a New Food System” program

·Build outreach skills in working with a predominantly non-English speaking population
