The intern will provide direct programmatic and administrative support to the Knowledge, Advocacy and Partnerships team in the HIV/AIDS Section to develop content for and regularly update internal and external communication and knowledge management platforms.

Purpose and Objective:

The fight against HIV/AIDS is not yet over, despite remarkable progress over the past decade. UNICEF’s HIV/AIDS programming addresses HIV prevention, treatment and care for infants, children, adolescents and mothers. To reach an AIDS-free generation, UNICEF focuses on the unfinished business in supporting countries to prevent new infections among children, women and adolescents, to eliminate mother-to-child transmission of HIV and to bring and retain mothers, children and adolescents living with HIV in lifelong care. 

The intern will provide direct programmatic and administrative support to the Knowledge, Advocacy and Partnerships team in the HIV/AIDS Section to develop content for and regularly update internal and external communication and knowledge management platforms, to support coordination of major events during a period of intense activity, to conduct literature reviews to inform the development of key knowledge products, to assist in the development of templates to be used to gather programmatic, political, research and/or data elements from country and partner organizations and to provide  other programmatic and administrative support as needed. 

The intern will gain exposure to increase their knowledge of the global HIV and AIDS agenda including the use of data for programming and advocacy, the elimination of mother to child transmission of HIV, pediatric treatment and care, adolescent HIV prevention, and the integration of services within other programmatic areas including maternal, newborn and child health issues. The intern will also interact with key partners in these arenas and apply and improve their writing and organizational skills. 

Main duties and responsibilities:

Under the supervision of the Programme Specialist (Partnerships & Learning), the intern will assist in internal and external communication and knowledge sharing on HIV.

• Conduct literature review and compile quarterly research summary, featuring the newest quality research within the broader child and adolescent HIV agenda
• Support research and content development for knowledge products and special project on topics related to children and HIV, including documentation of COVID-19 impacts on HIV programmes, emerging practices and lessons learned
• Assist in writing and editing key publications and knowledge products as needed, including quarterly newsletters
• Support to maintain internal and external websites (Sharepoint communication site, childrenanaids.org) and digital design of announcements to the Community of Practice
• Conduct review of documents and materials on childrenandaids.org and support website restructuring process
• Review membership of the Children and AIDS Community of Practice, map partners, identify and develop opportunities for increased engagement
• Assist in the smooth coordination and documentation of webinars
• Conduct literature reviews and tool/template development as needed, to gather information across country and partner organizations

• This internship will complement current academic training and provide exposure to the global EMTCT, pediatric and adolescent HIV development agenda.
• The intern will expand existing skills in technical writing, organizational and communication experience, gain hands-on experience organizing global meetings and apply newly acquired research skills to identify pertinent and timely content for the website, community of practice, literature reviews and tool development.
• This internship will provide the chance to test out potential career choices in the area of communications and knowledge management, monitoring and evaluation and international public health, by gaining real-life experience in a culturally diverse international organization.

Duration

Jan 2020 – June 2021, with possibility of extension depending on if the internship will be full time or part time.

Salary/Payment:

In accordance to UNICEF’s guidelines, interns will be paid a stipend of US $1,700 per month worked full time. There is no expectancy of employment at the end of the internship.

Insurance:

UNICEF will not be responsible for costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during the intern’s service, whether on or off UNICEF premises. Therefore, the selected candidate must provide proof of enrolment in a health/accident plan prior to start the internship with the HIV Section.

Living Conditions and Working Environment:

The intern will be remote based and work from home. The intern will work with the HIV Section and report to the supervisor of this internship. The intern is not expected to travel during the assignment. The intern will be expected to participate in HIV section meetings, as well as other UNICEF meetings of interest to the student, including the seminar series for UNICEF interns. Guidance will be provided on a regular basis.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will…

• Currently enrolled in a graduate (Master’s) degree in the area of public/global health, medical anthropology, health communications/promotion, gender studies, social sciences or a related field;
• Excellent academic performance, as demonstrated by academic records;
• Excellent writing and organizational skills;
• Coursework or experience related to HIV programming is a distinct advantage;
• Knowledge of web content management systems and basic digital design is an advantage;
• Prior experience with technical and non-technical communication or advocacy is an advantage;
• Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (French, Spanish, Russian, Arabic or Chinese) is an asset.
