Digital Project Management Consultant
Multiple locations (Multiple locations)
In December 2017, Sesame Workshop and the IRC were awarded the MacArthur Foundation’s inaugural 100&Change grant to make real progress toward solving a critical problem of our time and received $100 million to bring early education to refugee children. With this extraordinary investment, our partnership will transform the language, early reading, math, and social-emotional skills of a generation of children ages 0-8 affected by the Syrian war. Focusing on children in Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Northwest Syria and Northeast Syria over the next five years, the Ahlan Simsim project combines the depth of in-person services, reaching 1.5 million children, with the breadth of mass media, reaching 9.4 million children. The Ahlan Simsim team acknowledges that digital tactics and technology platforms provide a good opportunity to think about programming at scale. In addition, in the Syria Response region and due to ongoing displacement and populations movements there is a need to ensure maximum portability. These challenges that families were already experiencing in the region have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 outbreak, with thousands of children losing access to schools and educational activities, and caregivers taking over home schooling duties in already precarious settings.
As part of its response, the Ahlan Simsim team is preparing to pilot the use of a digital platform to engage with IRC clients remotely using WhatsApp. The platform will be used to share media rich content related to ECD awareness, activities that caregivers can do with children while at home, caregiver well-being, and COVID-19 related information. It also allows for two-way messaging and remote data collection through SMS messages and interactive voice recordings (IVR). IRC clients in the Middle East region will be able to “opt-in” to this platform to receive different types of information and activities targeted to the age of their children.
Along with the launch of this new platform, the Ahlan Simsim team is planning a research study, in collaboration with NYU. This study aims at optimizing the Ahlan Simsim WhatsApp platform through testing which types of content and message delivery maximize user engagement and to evaluate the effectiveness of the optimized WhatsApp platform in improving caregiver and child outcomes. On a global level, this study aims to contribute to the body of evidence evaluating ECD interventions in humanitarian and emergency settings, especially those where displacement, security issues, or emergencies may prevent consistent access to in-person services and necessitate remote service provision.
