Our conservation programme has strategic focus on Landscape Planning & Management, Wildlife & Protected Areas, and Responsible Investments, Production & Consumption. Our vision by 2030 is that the human footprint in Laos stays within the country’s capacity to maintain the full spectrum of biological diversity and ecosystems.
As Conservation Director you will lead the direction of the conservation programme and its development towards the achievement of the Country Office’s strategic plan objectives. You will ensure that fundraising objectives are reached in coordination with the WWF network, and build partnerships with public sector agencies and corporations through proactive networking. You will also be responsible for the accurate monitoring of the programme’s outcomes. As a member of the Country Management Team (CMT), you will have shared responsibility for the overall performance of the Country Programme.

Based in: Vientiane Capital, Lao PDR with extensive travel within country and globally.

As Conservation Director Laos, you will:

  • As direct line manager, provide supervision and guidance to key Conservation staff to ensure the conservation programme delivers results that contribute to achieving the objectives of the Country Office strategic plan;
  • Review and update WWF-Laos’ fundraising strategy to adopt ambitious yet realistic objectives for 2025, ensuring the strategy mobilizes support from the WWF Network to make WWF Laos their partner of choice for effective conservation;
  • Seek funding opportunities, as per the priorities of public sector partners, corporations, foundations and trusts, through Shareholders in WWF Network Offices and in cooperation with WWF Asia Pacific Technical Leads, the regional Resource Mobilisation Team and the WWF Laos country team;
  • Work with practice coordinators and project managers to develop funding proposals and ensure proposal quality before submission for endorsement through the funding pipeline systems;
  • Act as WWF Laos’ National Focal Point for WWF Global Goal and Driver Practices without a resident Focal point;
  • Supervise programme monitoring and evaluation to measure programme outcome toward the strategic plan and WWF Global Practices (through Critical Contributions);
  • Act as national focal point for multi-country proposals;
  • Plan, manage performance, provide induction, training, coaching and advice to ensure conservation staff are appropriately motivated and deliver on performance objectives;
  • Represent WWF-Laos vis-a-vis the Lao PDR Government, development agencies, I/NGOs and donors as appropriate;
    Your qualifications and demonstrable experience will include:

  • Master’s degree in conservation or natural resource management, sustainable development or other relevant fields;

  • Additional courses on project management and fundraising an advantage;

  • 10 years of practical experience in leading and managing integrated projects or programmes, 5 years of which should be in South East Asia;

  • Proven experience of managing programmes funded by a diversity of sources including institutional, governments and aid agencies, private sector donors with annual budget of 2-3 million USD;

  • 5 years of practical experience in fundraising for the non-profit sector; experience of working and negotiating with donors at all levels, and working with key regional and international institutions e.g. UN agencies, WB, ADB, etc.;

  • Proven experience of successful fundraising for projects of more than USD 500K;

  • Comprehensive knowledge of environmental and conservation issues in Lao PDR and SEA region.

Contract duration: 2 year fixed term contract with possible extension
