The Position

The position is part of Vital Strategies’ Policy, Advocacy and Communication’s global team of 45, comprised of people from varying backgrounds from public relations to advertising to communication research. The team has a collaborative culture, clustering people with different skills and backgrounds to execute projects. Vital Strategies’ global team values diversity and multicultural fluency.

We are seeking a Senior Manager, Tobacco Control Advocacy. This position will be based in Vital Strategies’ New York City office. Applicants must have a valid work permit to work in the United States at time of hire.

Reporting to the Vice President of Partnerships and Initiatives, the Senior Manager, Tobacco Control Advocacy will provide strategic guidance, management and support to the Tobacco Control Program which includes tobacco control policy advocacy and communication work in select countries in Asia, Latin America and Europe. They will also work on tobacco industry accountability projects as well as develop content material and reports.

Specific Duties

  • Create, oversee, and project manage strategic programmatic and communication functions working closely with in-country leads in select countries.

  • Assist country leads to develop strategic activities, from concerted multi-platform media campaigns to advocacy initiatives.

  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with Vital’s regional managers, partners, and other key stakeholders from governments and civil society to promote tobacco control policy and behavior change.

  • Develop and write reports, fact sheets, toolkits, newsletters, testimonials and other marketing materials to advance tobacco control initiatives.

  • Represent Vital Strategies with donors, partners, press events, conferences, and workshops as needed.

  • Work in tandem with Vital’s external communication team including editorial, social and graphic design staff.

  • Manage a variety of special projects including:

  • Oversee external agencies and organizations as needed to deliver on scopes of service

  • Work on tobacco industry accountability activities

  • Assist the PAC division as needed

  • Provide administrative support as requested

Skills & Abilities

● Highly strategic thinker with strong initiative, judgement and project management skills

● Excellent writer and storyteller, with a knack for connecting with audiences through exceptional written and verbal communication skills

● Strong media campaign savvy, with knowledge and skills in earned and digital communications, integrated campaigns, advocacy.

● Self-starter with ability to work independently and also collaboratively in cross-functional teams

● Ability to bring new, creative ideas to communicating the organization's work

● Experience using data to tell a story for non-technical audiences

● Knowledge of the public health policy development and advocacy process

● Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively across cultures, time zones and platforms, meet deadlines and manage multiple task in a busy work environment

Education and Degrees

● Master’s degree or equivalent, with 8 years’ experience, preferred

● Bachelor’s degree with minimum 10 years’ experience

Experience Required

● Minimum 8 to 10 years of work experience with progressive responsibility

Experience Preferred

● Experience in media and public relations

● Experience in public health / advocacy work / tobacco control / noncommunicable diseases

● Second language fluency in a U.N. Language

Travel Requirement

30%, when organization-wide travel is back in effect
