Mental Health-HIV Integration Program

Once at the epicenter of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, Zimbabwe has made much progress towards controlling its epidemic over the past few years. However, despite these gains, almost a quarter of patients initiated on treatment drop out of care by their 5th year and viral suppression among all people living with HIV (PLHIV) remains low.
Evidence shows that treating common mental disorders (CMDs) improves HIV outcomes across the continuum of care, but there remains a dearth of effective integrated mental health services in HIV treatment programs, in part due to a lack of mental health professionals in sub-Saharan Africa.

To address this, CHAI is initiating its MH-HIV integration program as part of a broader HIV grant by working with the MOHCC’s Mental Health and HIV Departments, as well as local and international clinicians, to:

• Evaluate the national health systems’ capacity to integrate care for CMDs into HIV programs and assess the operational feasibility of existing models of integrated care at select facilities to determine an optimized approach for national implementation.
• Demonstrate the feasibility of national roll out of an optimized model of integrated care to improve HIV clinical outcomes by addressing the mental health needs of PLHIV affected by CMDs. 

Position Overview

CHAI is seeking a highly motivated individual with outstanding credentials, analytical grounding and strong problem-solving abilities. The Associate is required to work with government officials and partners, and as such must have excellent relationship building, communication (written and verbal) and negotiation skills. They must be able to function independently and have a strong commitment to excellence, with a keen eye for detail. They should also exhibit the following important personal qualities: resourcefulness, responsibility, tenacity, independence, energy, the highest level of integrity and have a strong professional ethic.

• Support the Manager to liaise between program teams, management, and other CHAI global and country teams
• Coordinate and establish credibility and relationships with senior leaders in the MOHCC, in CHAI and relevant partner organizations
• Analyze and draw conclusions from data, to develop and deliver influential presentations (verbal, power point, other), to create documentation and materials that communicate market data and apply the insights generated to improving MH-HIV integration nationally
• Support the Manager in preparation of donor and progress reports/presentations for internal and external evaluation of the project
• Support the Manager in program development, implementation, planning, budgeting, forecasting, as well as monitoring and reporting
• Design and develop internal and external data collection tools, tracking key grant indicators and ensuring methodologies remain consistent across grants and years
• Provide regular reports on progress to the Manager
• Perform any other duties as assigned by the Manager

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent plus 3 years’ work experience
• Excellent problem solving, analytical and quantitative skills
• Ability to work effectively in a high-pressure, fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks simultaneously
• Ability to learn on the job quickly and absorb and synthesize a broad range of information
• Entrepreneurial mindset, including ability to self-motivate, and propose and implement new initiatives
• High level of proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, PowerPoint and Word
• Experience working with governments and international partners in country
• Experience structuring and leading evidence-based decision-making processes
• Proven track record working in challenging multi-stakeholder environments

Advantages

• Master’s degree or clinical experience in relevant discipline
• Working knowledge of statistical packages, e.g. STATA, SPSS
• Experience managing change in developing countries, and partnering with donors, branches of government, NGOs or demonstrated experience in related areas
• Willingness and ability to travel if required and at short notice
