SCOPE OF YOUTH ENGAGEMENT INTERN WORK:

IRC San Diego has run the Refugee Education, Acculturation, Civic Engagement, and Health (REACH) program in Hoover and Crawford High Schools since 1996, helping more than 100 refugee youth every year successfully stay in school, graduate, and transition to college or a career. REACH’s focus is on newly arrived refugee youth who have experienced trauma and continue to deal with a great deal of stress through the process of acculturation and language acquisition.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

·The intern will be responsible for assisting with the youth department’s spring programs.

·The intern will be responsible for assisting in outreach, implementation, and administration of spring programming involving, but not limiting to, Girls Academy, Peacemakers, Newcomer Leadership Council, and Academic Support.

·Interns will learn how to facilitation programming in a trauma informed, culturally responsive manner; and learn how to cultivate an equitable, antiracist environment.

 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

1.Intern will be able to provide engaging activities for high school students using trauma-informed and culturally/linguistically responsive practices.

2.Intern will be able to provide basic program management support (outreach/recruitment, intake, data entry, lesson planning).

3.Intern will display their newly developed program management skills through researching, planning, and executing a civic engagement event by the end of their term.
