Founded in 1933, the IRC is a leading nonsectarian, voluntary organization providing relief, protection and resettlement services for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict. In the U.S.; IRC provides assistance to refugees resettling here through 27 offices operating in 16 states. IRC resettles approximately 11,000 refugees per year and provides numerous program services to assist the refugee from their arrival through citizenship. The IRC in Salt Lake City opened it office in 1994, and provides resettlement services through extended case management to newly arrived refugees for up to 24-months as well as over twenty different programs to educate and empower refugees.
The Economic Wellbeing & Education Access COVID Response Assistant (EWEA) will support both the Economic Empowerment Youth and Education programs under the direction of the Education Program Supervisor. The unemployment insurance and housing support opportunities grow increasingly difficult to navigate for refugees in Utah, the Education and Economic Wellbeing Assistant will provide one-on-one support to increase capacity to support refugee households through lengthy benefit applications for emergency housing, employment and small business relief. EWEA will also expand the Education Team’s efforts to reach school-aged refugee students affected by interruptions and cancellations of school and other academic support programming due to COVID-19. With support from the EWEA, they will focus on connecting school-aged refugee students with online learning and one-on-one virtual and in-person tutoring.
- Research and broaden resource lists as COVID assistance policies shift
- Develop toolkits for other staff to ensure quick action can be taken as additional resources become available
- Train key volunteers to support in virtual programming tailored to help refugees re-enter the job market
- Support benefits navigation and small business recovery as needs grow within IRC SLC’s Spice Kitchen Incubator, Microenterprise Development and New Roots programming
·Coordinate with Education team supervisors for connecting with clients (parents and students) for support with e-learning; including training for digital platforms and academic tutoring
·Support the Education team in partnering with the school on accessing loaner devices/ laptops and hotspots through deliveries and up-to-date tracking
·Support clients in accessing virtual platforms for participation in IRC SLC Education programming (ie Zoom, WhatsApp for business, and Microsoft Teams)
