The IRC video unit is responsible for the archival storage of all the video products produced by the IRC. This footage is currently stored on a QNAP NAS system.Metadata needs to be added beyond file/folder names so that the footage is more easily searchable and does not rely on individual knowledge. This effort represents preparatory steps towards cataloging.

Starting with the tagging vocabulary used by the IRC photo DAM, we’d like to model how those terms might be applied to create records for the content of a video camera cards in our archive (the digital version of a “reel.”) Since camera cards can represent an hour of footage, this is akin to a box level description in a Finding Aid. Working under the supervision of the IRC’s Video Archivist (who comes from a career as an Emmy winning editor), the Archive Video Intern will create a series of “demo” or proof-of-concept records with the ultimate goal of expanding item-level description of video clips.

Major Responsibilities:

The focus of activity will be laying the groundwork for cataloging the IRC video archive.

• Become familiar with team workflow, actual footage and recurring subject matter.

• Research descriptive terminology used to date, unique or tailored to the IRC.

• Review said terminology for integrity and errors.

• Research and/or borrow from metadata standards relevant to the IRC video archive.

• Trial run applying descriptive metadata/tags to select projects’ camera cards.

• Describing content will require screening footage and determining tag applicability.

• Research database options to store the above catalog/Finding Aid information

Learning Outcomes:

• Gain experience with video editing projects and video file-based footage

• Gain experience with controlled vocabulary and application to footage

• Improve understanding the many manifestations of a video project along with its documentation or “paper trail”

• Acquire experience with a contemporary digital asset management system DAM.

• Expand understanding “dirty data” and data governance
