SCA Background

The Swedish Committee for Afghanistan (SCA) has been working in Afghanistan since 1982, presently managing development Programmes concerning Health, Education, Rural Livelihoods and Community Governance, with a total annual budget of roughly USD 40 million. The total number of staff is around 5,500. During the last 10 years SCA has undertaken a change process moving from a primarily humanitarian service delivery approach towards more of a developmental role, putting increasing emphasis on capacity development, rights-based programming and outcome orientation. The mission of SCA is to empower individuals, communities and local organizations, primarily in rural areas and with particular focus on women, girls, boys and vulnerable groups such as people with disabilities, so that they may participate fully in society and influence their own development. Scope of work:

Prosthetist/Orthotist (ISPO Category I) is responsible for direct user/patient services and management of the DP’s orthopaedic workshop, providing direct service to persons with disabilities; management and supervision training and education; community services; research and development and carried out within an ethical code and complying with medical and legal requirements.

Qualifications & Requirements:

Prosthetics & Orthotics ISPO Category I (4 years formal structured education Leading to University degree).  

2-3 years’ relevant to Prosthetics & Orthotics experience, especially within an NGO, UN agencies or similar organization.

Computer skill at operator level, especially with MS Office packages.

Fluency in English and Dari and/or Pashto, both written and spoken

Interpersonal and communication skills

Team worker, analytical, and troubleshooting skills

Experience of planning, reporting and budgeting

Ability and willingness to travel to the project sites within Afghanistan and adjust to SCA environment.

Honest, proactive and well mannered.

Main Responsibilities:

Supervisory Tasks:

Supervises and directs the activities to be performed by Category II (orthopaedic technologists) and Category III (bench technicians) personnel in fitting and fabrication.

Provide ongoing appropriate technical support to staff working with workshops.

Supervises clinical and laboratory/workshop activities assigned to him/her, including: 

Use and maintenance of tools and equipment

Maintenance of safe working environment and procedures

Inventory and stock control 

Personnel matters 

financial matters 

Appropriate record keeping 

Total quality management

Technical Tasks:

1. Patient Care

Participates as active member of the clinic team in discussion, meetings; takes part in the examination and prescription; and advises on the design of the prosthetic/orthotic device, including the socket or body/device interface, suspension and selection of proper components.

Assists and advises in consultation with physiotherapist on relevant aspects of pre-surgical, post-surgical, therapeutic management of individuals requiring prosthetic/orthotic devices.

Records and reports any relevant information regarding users and user’s families, including a determination of expectations and needs.

Communicates appropriate information to the users and their families.

2. Fitting, fabrication and treatment

 Supervises and directs the activities of individuals in Category II (orthopaedic technologists) and Category III (bench technicians) in fitting and fabrication.

 Identifies physical and other relevant characteristics of the user.

 Formulates prosthetics or orthotics designs, including selection of materials, components and additional aids.

 Takes all casts and measurements required for proper fabrication and fitting.

 Modifies positive and/or negative models and/or layout of design to obtain optimal fit and alignment.

 Carries out fitting, static and dynamic alignment and, where appropriate, preliminary training and initial checkout.

Performs and/or supervises fabrication of the prosthesis or orthosis.

3. Evaluation and follow-up

Advises the team and participates directly in final checkout and evaluation of fit, function and cosmetic.

Instructs the user or family in the use and care of the device.

Takes part in follow-up procedures as well as maintenance, repairs and replacement of the appliance.

 Recognizes the need to repeat any of the identified steps in order to optimise fit and function.

Collaborates and consults with others engaged in the management of the person requiring prosthetics/orthotics service.

Training Tasks:

Supervises and conducts education and training of individuals Category II (orthopaedic technologists) and Category III (technicians/bench workers).

Lectures and demonstrates to colleagues in his/her profession and other professionals concerned with prosthetics/orthotics and to other interested groups.

Take part in and contribute to the process of continuing professional development.

Keeps abreast of new developments concerning prosthetics/orthotics and teaching techniques.

Makes a professional contribution to and takes part in community rehabilitation programs.

Conducts continuing evaluation of his activities.

Participates in formal evaluation and research programs.

Participates in scientific/professional meetings and contributes papers to scientific/professional journals.

Tasks of inter organizational relation:

To participate actively in workshops, seminars & conference organised by the SCA management

Promotes good coordination with other SCA projects, all RMOs units and other units/departments at RMOs
