Job Description

CS4OD is a new dedicated activity to identify, select, support, and guide high-impact international projects where CERN expertise and tools would provide maximum results. A dedicated team of data scientists and data engineers, supervised by CERN experts in the IT Department will support and guide researchers from selected initiatives, helping them to become proficient with the CERN tools and sound data science principles, automate the operations and implement efficient data architectures and analysis pipelines, respecting principles of data governance, and compliance with existing laws and norms.

​As data scientist in CS4OD you will work with the selected projects on the definition of algorithms and data analysis pipelines and their implementation using CERN tools, noteably Zenodo according to FAIR principles (Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability, Reproducibility), and contribute to data engineering activities, such as data selection, curation, and standardisation.

Qualifications

Eligibility criteria:

• You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State;
• You have graduated, or are about to graduate with a university degree (BSc or MSc level in computer science,engineering or another relevant course) and have no more than 4 years’ relevant experience after obtaining your degree;
• Kindly note that experience prior to the latest obtained degree will not be taken into account for the calculation of your overall years of experience.

Essential skills and experience:

• Scientific analysis workflows, statistical methods, machine learning, deep learning methods; 
• Working knowledge on notebook technologies (Jupyter, Binder) and relevant programming languages (e.g. Python), mathematical and analysis environments (e.g. Octave, Matlab), Machine Learning/Deep Learning frameworks (e.g. PyTorch, TensorFlow);
• You have experience working with various data and metadata formats; FAIR research data and and experience of RDF would be a plus;
• You are able to build good relationships and consensus across stakeholders with varying aims.

Please note that CERN Staff members are not eligible to apply for a Fellowship.

In return, CERN will provide you with:

• An employment contract for between six months (minimum) up to a maximum of 36 months.
• A stipend ranging from 5,281 to 6,558 Swiss Francs per month (net of tax).
• Coverage by CERN’s comprehensive health scheme (for yourself, your spouse and children), and membership of the CERN Pension Fund.
• Depending on your individual circumstances: an installation grant, family, child and infant allowances as well as travel expenses to and from Geneva.
• 2.5 days of paid leave per month.
