OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

The World Health Organization's Department of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Research (SRH) includes the UNDP/UNFPA/UNICEF/WHO/World Bank Special Programme of Research, Development and Research Training in Human Reproduction (HRP). HRP is the main instrument within the United Nations system for identifying research priorities on sexual and reproductive health and rights; for promoting, conducting, evaluating and coordinating related interdisciplinary research; for collaborating with countries to strengthen national capacity to conduct research; and for promoting the use of research results in policy making and sexual and reproductive health programmes. The Department draws on research and global expertise to set norms and standards and develop global guidelines on sexual and reproductive health and rights. This includes development of new methodologies for and analyses of data for estimating SRH-related global indicators for monitoring towards international development goals including Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

(1) Coordinates with other persons/groups to initiate, organize and/or follow-up the work on classification, measurement and monitoring of sexual and reproductive health including carrying out relevant research and systematic reviews of evidence, facilitating consensus building in appropriate approaches for synthesis and analysis of information; and definitions, classifications and methodologies.(2) Leads and develops the work of the Department in Monitoring and Evaluation of sexual and reproductive health within the continuum of care including measurement and monitoring of maternal mortality and morbidity and especially as relating to health system interface.(3) Leads WHO/SRH activities in defining the sexual, reproductive and maternal health indicators as part of the SDG monitoring framework; coordinates with other WHO departments to ensure harmonization of monitoring and evaluation on indicators related to sexual, reproductive and maternal health; manages the WHO Secretariat of the Maternal Mortality Interagency Group, working to ensure leading and harmonization of UN agency activities related to maternal mortality estimation.(4) Prepares reports including Interagency reports and manuscripts for submission in scientific journals, emanating from the work on measuring and monitoring sexual, reproductive and maternal health indicators. (5) Provides authoritative advice to Member States, UN agencies, other inter-governmental and non-governmental agencies on matters relating to epidemiology and global monitoring of reproductive, maternal and perinatal health, other WHO Headquarters Departments and WHO Regional and Country Offices. (6) Establishes and manages collaboration with relevant scientists, organizations and institutions, including WHO Collaborating Centres in order to achieve the objectives of the Team and WHO/SRH.(7) Leads the development of a programme of work for this area by identifying research priorities and developing and implementing research projects related to epidemiology of sexual and reproductive health for both HRP and WHO/SRH, within the context of the Department's comprehensive work in sexual and reproductive health. (7) Assures publication in the scientific literature as well as other forms of dissemination of research results. Prepares technical progress reports on SRH's work in this area for governing and advisory bodies, WHO reporting requirements, and donors. Assures development of comprehensive communication strategies to disseminate the work of the Department.(8) Carries out other tasks, as requiredby the Unit Head. Contributes to the development of the Team's portfolio of activities

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Essential: An advanced university degree in medicine, health systems, demography, epidemiology, social sciences, or a closely related field to the subject. Advanced training in epidemiology in sexual and reproductive health.
Desirable: A PhD in epidemiology or public health. Training in evidence-based medicine

Experience

Essential: At least 7 years of epidemiological experience, some of which in an international context and in low-resource settings in sexual and reproductive including maternal health. Demonstrated experience in conducting research on quantitative measurement of maternal health outcomes and in systematic reviews. Demonstrated experience in managing and establishing collaborative links with research groups and networks.
Desirable: Research experience with a UN agency

Skills

Extensive knowledge of epidemiology in aspects of sexual, reproductive, maternal and perinatal health. Solid knowledge of research designs and statistical analysis including modelling approaches. Proven skills in measurement of sexual and reproductive health including maternal health outcomes. Critical appraisal of published literature. Demonstrated ability to write scientific reports and articles, as evidenced by an extensive publication track record in peer-reviewed scientific journals. Ability to work with multiple partners, technical networks and in a multicultural environment.

REMUNERATION

WHO salaries for staff in the Professional category are calculated in US dollars. The remuneration for the above position comprises an annual base salary starting at USD 73,516 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable), a variable post adjustment, which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station, and currently amounts to USD 5483 per month for the duty station indicated above. Other benefits include 30 days of annual leave, allowances for dependent family members, home leave, and an education grant for dependent children.
