ABOUT THE ROLE

The Transparency International Secretariat is currently seeking a Research Coordinator to join the Research and Knowledge Team, to support TI’s REAP project.

The Rallying Efforts to Accelerate Progress (REAP) – Africa Inequalities Initiative aims at generating greater evidence on the impact of illicit financial flows and tax evasion and avoidance across the region; identifying key destination countries where international cooperation should be strengthened; exposing inadequacies in legal and institutional frameworks, and raising awareness of citizens and the private sector on the impact of illicit financial flows and tax abuse, amongst others.

The Transparency International Secretariat is currently seeking a Research Coordinator to conduct research and coordinate activities aimed at generating evidence, in partnership with local organisations, on the extent, types and impact of illicit financial flows, tax evasion and tax avoidance in Africa and highlighting innovative tools and approaches to tackle them. 

OVERVIEW OF KEY DIMENSIONS

Role Purpose: Conduct and coordinate research activities on illicit financial flows, tax evasion and tax avoidance in Africa to meet the objectives of the REAP project.

Starting Date: 1 April 2021 / as soon as possible

Contract Duration: Currently we can offer an employment contract limited for a duration of 2 years.

MAIN ACCOUNTABILITIES OF THE ROLE

Based in the Research and Knowledge Team, the Research Coordinator will:        

  • Contribute to the development of knowledge materials, tools and methodologies to meet the project objectives, including producing briefs and on-demand research and policy support to local CSOs related to illicit financial flows, tax evasion, tax avoidance etc.
  • Provide thematic support to targeted national chapters and their activities to generate evidence on illicit financial flows, tax evasion and tax avoidance in the Africa region
  • Coordinate research undertaken by co-applicants and affiliates and develop knowledge materials, including providing quality control of REAP research outputs and overseeing the development of relevant knowledge materials by chapters
  • Undertake and support regional research on risks and patterns of illicit financial flows
  • Write blogs and provide research support to advocacy and communication campaigns
  • Generate ideas, develop concept notes/proposals, and activities that are aligned with organisational priorities
  • Contribute to day-to-day work implementation, including work planning, budget management, monitoring, and reporting, ensuring that all phases are consistent with the design and delivery schedule and internal processes and procedures
  • Stay abreast of developments relating to the area of work and be available to respond to on-demand internal and external stakeholder needs
  • Represent the organisation at relevant fora within area of expertise as needed; build relationships and form alliances with external counterparts, communities of practice and stakeholders
  • Contribute to the overall functioning of the Research and Knowledge team by providing proactive and ad hoc support where necessary

CANDIDATE PROFILE

In order to succeed in this role, candidates will need to meet the following:

  • Masters or equivalent in a relevant field of the social sciences, such as political science, sociology, economics, public administration or a related field, with an academic emphasis on research 
  • 5+ years of relevant professional experience
  • Extensive knowledge of anti-corruption, good governance and development fields required, with previous experience and expertise on illicit financial flows and/or anti-money laundering an advantage
  • Substantive experience in research coordination in a multi-country/international setting
  • Demonstrated project management skills with strong organizational skills and the ability to successfully manage priorities in a dynamic and fast paced environment
  • Solid writing, editing and communication skills
  • Ability to work in a team as well as independently, particularly at distance communication
  • Professional language proficiency in English required; professional language proficiency in French an advantage
  • Proven commitment to social justice issues and the values of Transparency International
